Hi everyone, my name is Lou. I am 32 from Northeast PA and have been surrounded by cars my entire life. My dad owns and operates a small service station (now just auto repair shop) that my grandfather started in 1953. They sold mobil until 2000 at this location and then a second location from 2001-2008. My dad and grandfather weren’t much of collectors for the gas and oil stuff, only cars. We are Buick guys. As an example: The original pole a double sided Pegasus was mounted on is still at my dad’s shop, but the sign was sold for $400 in 2000.
Anyway, I started collecting gas & oil about 5 years ago, specifically Mobil. I buy what I can afford. One day I hope to have better condition signs, but I do like the rusty stuff. I’ve been a long time lurker on this site, but recently joined to have the 2 questions answered below.
1) today I picked up this once 3x5’ Mobilgas sign and am looking for more info on it. It’s rough. Can anyone point me in the right direction of the approximate year range and post a pic of a complete sign?
2) my wife thinks I’m a fool for paying $100 for this. Can you validate my purchase?
*not for sale, not looking to gauge interest. It’s a keeper until I can replace it with something better one day*
