Thanks for the responses everyone. I was worried I probably couldn't do much to save it but I always believe its best to exhaust every option.
I hadnt thought of removing the section from the door. As its a pump that has a family connection I am hesitant to save the door (more likely to save the other door actually as I have the paint worked down to the point the old mid 60s era paint scheme is clear. I'm also not accomplished on metal work, but such a project of cutting it out may be a fun way to get my hands dirty. Something I'll be thinking more about the rest of the winter before I can get back to work on things.
