Hello -

I found this recently out in the desert and hoped I could learn something about it. I don't find this particular sign on eBay, LiveAuctioneers, etc.

This sign measures 7 1/4 inches high and 7 inches wide.

Can anyone help with:

1) Age / time frame
2) Use / purpose (pump plate??)
3) Value

i would assume 1940-50s, i have only seen one other that i remember. I would assume its a pump plate, other possibility would be truck door sign, but usually truck door signs do not say 'Gasoline' on them. Value tough to guess cause of all the scratching. $500-1000?

3.) condition not that bad, that will clean up, one you never see - 1500. / 2k+ .. ...

Thinking about trying to clean it up some - do you have any recommendations for the best way to do that (address the rust and scratches)? Or perhaps know of online resources I could research to find a safe way to clean it?

Muriatic acid works the best. Just be careful and wear gloves and a mask and make sure you have a fan blowing any fumes away from you.

Available at hardware store or Home Depots.

Apply with brush and wash it down. After sitting a few minutes wipe off with wet cloth.
