About two years ago I restored a Clockface for a client in Mobil. I used an aftermarket milkglass body and repro lenses. Put everything together and took pictures to send the customer. Shop was around 70, which is normal. Next morning, one side was cracked....I think I over tightened the nuts as you might have. Mine were not nearly as costly as yours though.
