id like to know when or why
the contains lead "anti knock compounds" sign was used as opposed to the "tetraethyl' contains lead sign?

does anyone know?

T2T - I'M THINKING IT WAS SO THE AVERAGE JOE AND/OR JOSEPHINE KNEW WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT, HENCE NOT SO MANY QUESTIONS FLYING AROUND AT THE STATION WHILE GAS WAS BEING PUMPED!
I HAVE SEVERAL OF THESE WITH THE ANTI-KNOCK COMPOUND STICKERS
OVER THE TETRAETHYL WORDING!

Probably because the public can relate to the knocking noise they heard in their engines on low-lead gas.

Doesnt answer the question, but gives some insight into the negative history of TetraETHYL lead use in gas as a antiknock compound. Maybe it was accepted and understood more as "antiknock" vs "tetraethyl"

I like the Anti-Knock signs. 30 pumps here & all came with tetraethyl. i found some anti-knock NOS signs, & id like more.
i didnt know if these signs came out later or for what reason???

Interesting article, but a couple facts are wrong. Leaded gasoline is NOT illegal in the U.S. Here in Minnesota, several stations (including the one a few blocks from my home) still sell LEADED regular and LEADED premium gas. People with older cars (usually classic restored cars) love to put leaded premium into their cars. Farmers use regular for their equipment, and peple who have older lawnmowers also use regular. I just drove by and checked the pumps for price.....Leaded Regular $1.53, Leaded Premium $1.83....and this is full-service, too!

Sounds like it was written by a tree hugger. The article was full of opinions and short on fact. There were some "facts" stated in the article, that just aren't true. I remember reading alot about the subject back in the 80's and much of the EPA's research was flawed. The big concern was low IQ's in inner city children. The EPA said it was from leaded gas. They didn't take into acount all the other reasons for low IQ's in inner city children. Our local paper had an article about the evils of leaded gas. I did some research and wrote a rebuttle. The editor said "WOW".

Up until last year you could still buy leaded Unical 108 at a local station/repair shop here near Chitown. However, you could not fill your vehicle at the pump, and you had to sign an affidavit saying you were only using the fuel for research or racing purposes. Once I got to know the guy he would pump it into my 1967 blown Camaro. Granted it was $5.00 something a gallon, but it was great gas! I think the pump is now gone.

In rural areas in Illinois you don't have to pass emissions testing due to sparce populations. My friend registers his modified Mustang to his dads farm and isn't required to go to emmisions testing.

Sorry to rub it in your faces, but in Minnesota, we don't have emissions testing at all.

I, too, researched the whole "leaded gas is killing our children" **** of the 1980s. What the article failed to mention is that, while highly overrated, the biggest danger of lead poisoning comes from lead paint.

Here's a funny story about rural life. A handful of years ago I took a trip to northern Minnesota. My car takes unleaded gas, and I was running low. I got off the freeway onto a rural road and followed the gas signs about fifteen miles. Sure enough, there was an old rural gas station with only one pump--and it dispensed LEADED regular! I couldn't believe it....no unleaded anywhere. So I had to travel the fifteen miles back to the freeway then another twenty miles before I found another station with unleaded. I almsot ran out of gas. Anyway, take my word for it: leaded gas is still around. (Which is good news if you have an older car).

The only areas of Illinois that have emission testing are Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, and the East St. Louis area.

After leaded gas had been outlawed in Illinois I could still buy leaded racing gas at two stations. One Shell station sold Cam2 (Sunoco) racing gas, and one Union 76 station sold their racing gas. You could only pump it into a trailered cars tank or a gas can. Price was about $3.80 a gallon in 87-88. We could also get Turbo Blue leaded racing gas at the track. Lots of guys burned pistons because they switched from Cam2 or Union to Turbo Blue without re-jetting their carbs. Kinda made me think Turbo Blue was half methanol.

Got me hanging Tetra / Anti but aircraft still use 80 or 100 octaine both are leaded and all I have noticed on the pumps is tetraethyl. By the way 80 octaine leaded is now cheeper than auto gas $1.52/gal wish I could burn that in my truck!!

A little off subject still but-

That Methanol stuff is **** ! It does nasty things to rubber components. I have a 671 blown small block in my '67 Camaro that pumps out @ 500 HP. In the search for local "racing gas" I tried Road Pilot 99 octane with methanol additives. The fuel blistered and ate through the rubber diaphram inside my Mallory fuel regulator TWICE before I figured out the cause. The fuel then exits a vent hole in the regulator and wizzed on my front header tube!! I was extremely upset about this as it was a very dangerous situation. Then I had to run all over creation to locate these diaphrams for my fuel regulator. I talked to the manager of the station and got nowhere with the Pakistani putz. I tried to contact Road Pilot corporate but just ended up dropping the whole thing and never going back for that gas.

Methanol is EVIL!
