I have garage that opens to a fairly busy residential street but I mostly access it from an entry door in my back yard. I only open that door about 10 times a year now and just to get the gto out.
I found out real quick after moving here 10 years ago that everyone who drives or walks by looks to see whats in there. For the first year I didn't mind because I liked talking to the people and letting them look at my collection. Then I started having a recurring dream where I opened that rear entry door and there was nothing left in the garage but leaves blowing around on the floor. The garage door was open to the street and ALL my stuff was gone. After waking up at 3am several times to make sure I shut the door I decided to disable the garage door opener and installed locks on it.
Now only people I know get to see whats in there.
And my Springfield XD9 doesn't have a safety either...it's always ready to go!

Many camera phones have GPS built-in. If you take photos with a GPS enabled device, they can insert the latitude/longitude into the jpg header. Most should be able to turn that feature off in their preferences menu. I'd encourage everyone who takes pics with their camera to check that out and make sure yours is set to OFF for GPS in your digital images.
Average digital cameras don't have that capability, so there isn't the same location vulnerability.

Things have changed in the last 25 years for sure, drugs,drugs. Used to have things open, not anymore. Acquaintances have said the same about out in the country.

Wow! I guess I'm real lucky as I live in a neighborhood where everything is left unlocked and the neighbors actually watch each others property for any problems!(fire, flood, prowlers)
We leave our keys in the vehicles, the lawnmower sitting out all summer, pressure washer in front of the shop,and the garage door is usually open if the car is being used!
I think that if I lived in a neighborhood like you guys have described, I'd be making major plans to be moving! I just really could not live like that! Couldn't agree more.

In the old ranch house where my wife grew up, they didn't even have a lock on the door, keys were left in the rigs in case some one broke down they could take a rig to get parts. We still live out in the country but I wouldn't leave anything out side. Richard

Open up that garage door, just have a Glock 9mm tucked in the back of your pants... with the safety on! You do mean in an IWB holster, right?  I'm in the NRA, and I vote!!! I agree, Jeff!  I guess maybe I'm paranoid, too. My doors are always locked and my car is kept locked even when it's in the garage. I also don't like people that I don't know knowing where I live or what I have. Better safe than sorry.

I shouldn't have to worry where I live as well (out in the country), but you never know. I have pumps outside and don't worry too much, but I do lock my doors at night and I have an alarm with 4 little ones in the house. My office has cameras and an alarm, but if they really want something, they can get it. Have good collectors insurance and at least it will give you some piece of mind. Mine insures both my home and office.
