I seems that it never fails, a project will spawn several more. The restoration project of my Wayne 60 did just that. In the task of trying to find a good local engraver for the ID tag I decided to use the metal stamps I already had. The challenge is to accurately hold the stamp in relation to each other and the ID plate. My solution is the creation of an XY machine to hold the single stamps. I think all in all, it is a success. The depth of the impression allows for a paint fill. I am pretty happy with the results. The tag shown is my first practice try.

That’s awesome. You should offer it as a service.

Thanks. Yeah, I already thought of that. Not sure I really want the hassle. Still kinda perfecting my process.

Wow, very cool! I like your set-up, I usually end up using paint sticks and clamps to hold the plate down, and then use my harbor freight stamps against the paint sticks to get a decent row of letters. Works OK, not great. I think the eye is not very forgiving of text not being at the same height (up/down), but spacing being a little off is just fine. Nice you'll have that all set up for future stamps.

Yeah know Paul, stamping still isn't engraving, but with proper setup it is pretty good. I guess it gives it that original look. The accuracy is dependent on the quality of the stamps. I actually have to turn the zero stamp upside down to get proper alignment.

Great idea, great metal work! I occasionally had to stamp parts a long time back and had to use masking tape as a guide. I would carefully slide the character on the stamp against the masking tape. It worked OK, but sometimes the stamp would slide up on the masking tape a bit. This is much better.
