I have a 12’ Goodyear sign that has a long crack in it. I want to repair it bc they’re hard to find. What is the best way to fix a crack in a plastic sign. It’s going on a pole I have for it and it will be on the backside so I just want to secure it and make it look a little better. Thanks for any help or information!!

Hey Josh, I was in the commercial sign business for years and manufactured large plastic faces, so I can help you out. The sign is probably made from acrylic, and can be repaired with Methylene chloride, also called Dichloromethane, which is the adhesive manufacturers use to glue panels, hanger bars etc on the large commercial signs you see everywhere. I would suggest going to youtube and watching an instructional video on using it, there is no forgiveness, and it will strip paint off the inside of the sign face faster than you can sneeze, but it's the only viable option. Best of luck, just be diligent, it will be worth it!

Yeah, I'll repeat the acrylic solvent approach. That's what I've done as well. It wicks into the crack and bonds quickly, so you need to put everything into place first and then bond it. Using a small bottle with a needle to apply is the way to go, fine control is good. It will remove the inside paint if you try to wipe off extra solvent.

It won’t hurt the outside of the sign will it? The inside will not be seen.

It won’t hurt the outside of the sign will it? The inside will not be seen. The solvent seems to leave a slight mark wherever it sits, it's minor though. It is best to have a little bottle and a needle so you have fine control wicking it into the cracks, that gives you best results. I've bought this kit from amazon with good results. This is an example of a sign that has been repaired with solvent. It was bad, smashed in. I had to re-align everything while using long clamps to hold the sign tight together for cementing. I let it sit for a day and then unclamped it post glueing, everything stayed together nicely but its a fragile repair.
The missing spots probably could have been fixed using a little material scavenged from an unseen edge, but I didnt think the time was worth it.

Paul's explanation and suggestions are spot on, hope it works out! BTW nice fix Paul, we had a yard full of similar sign cans from local businesses, dozens of COKE & PEPSI signs from convenience stores, and a ton of Service Station signs from re-branding that we kept around for repaints etc, now I wish we would have kept them instead of scrapping the faces, but it was the 80's, what did we know, besides we had a pretty good time cleaning the faces off with Lacquer thinner (⊙_⊙)
