Dear Forum, I am in the process of restoring a Wayne, model 70 with Royal ad glasses on all four sides. As far as I can tell, it was all white with a Conoco decal and another decal at a 45 degree angle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as well as suggestions to what type of globe came with it. Thank you in advance for your time. Mike

Welcome to Oldgas. Best of luck in your restoration!

As shown in the excerpt pictures from " PCM Guide to Gas Pump Restoration" (out of print), the angled decals probably read "PREMIUM" and were used 1965-1970. The "Royal" ad glass branding was used from 1959-1965. Royal was a premium grade gas.
I recommend restoring to the branding scheme of 1959-65 with the red "Royal" triangles and no angled decals. A red top and green base on a white pump.
But it is yours to do the way you like it best.

Conoco began selling Royal gasoline in March 1957 and the gas pumps would have had a large Conoco triangle on the body. The Wayne 70 would have also had the ad glass that you have. I have a handful of photos of Conoco gas stations in the late 1950's (when Royal was sold) and none of the photos with a Wayne 70 show a globe. I am attaching two for examples. Royal was discontinued by Conoco in mid-1961 and those diagonal decals were then used for the replacement, called "Premium". You would not have seen a Royal gas pump with a diagonal decal. Good luck with your restoration!

Gentlemen, Thank you for the warm welcome! It is much appreciated. Also, thank you for the wealth of information. I even have directions on where to place the stickers! I really like the red top, white body and green base. As for the globe or not, this "I believe" had one because the top has a larger whole that is embossed and has 4 recessed holes for screws. The electrical was also run up. Oh, by the way, they used some really nasty seal off compound back then. I had fun drilling it all out to rewire it.

I agree with Jim on this one. I would restore it all white with a green base , and a red Royal triangle pump plate.
The only difference is, if you want to keep it somewhat original, I would not paint the top a different color, I would paint it white as well. I have not found a tall Conoco electric pump (Wayne model 70’s, 60’s, etc) in old pictures that has a different color top. The only ones I have noticed with a different color top are the shorter pumps (mostly M&S/ Wayne 80’s and a few Tokheim 39’s).
Plus I think a painted top might take away from the globe.
But in the end, as mentioned above, do what you like and what makes you happy. And remember gas station owners slapped paint on these and they changed to different variations over the years anyway.

Also…. Your pump was probably updated with the stickers when the shorter MS80 pumps were brought into service to keep up with the times.
I would guess if you look behind the stickers that you have a hole pattern for a Conoco pump plate, if the ad glass is original to the pump. If there are no holes, it may have been re-branded from something else all together at some point in its service life.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, if they used decals on this era of pump.

All Wayne 70’s (and many other model numbers) came from the factory with the globe hole, cover plate & electrical conduit for a globe. Even if a globe wasn’t used it would have all of this. So your pump may have never had a globe even though the provisions are there.

Mr Speed Racer, You are spot on about the stickers verse plate. There are three small holes in a triangle shape. I found a metal plate on Ebay but it was $500... Uhmm, Sorry you detail guys, it isn't happening! They will be vinyl. Ha.
What I didn't realize is the base was all aluminum. I need to polish and shoot green. Anyway, just thought I would share that.
Thanks again for ALL the input. Fantastic!

Mr CG Gas, What is this..."Even if a globe wasn’t used " Heaven forbid!!! That is Sacrilege. You just have to have a Globe! With a light in it even! You just got to! ;p
