Was this common? I was wondering if this “method of installation” is evidence of their authenticity or being fake?

I have no idea of their authenticity. You just asked how something like that would’ve been mounted. Similar to a coke button if the bracket wasn’t there. Just mount wood or angle iron to the wall on the inside of the sign.
