Dumb question but 'back in the day' would they have had a working gas pump inside like that, even if placed by the door? Or would that just have been decorative sitting there?

Probably was acceptable back in the day.
Things have changed a lot on 'safety issues' since then.
Back then, they sold candy for kids in glass containers that the children would then play with!
Later . . .

There were many stations, car dealers in my area that had gas pumps inside, very similar to this photo. I ended up with several of them

I bought a pump at a private residence in a formerly affluent neighborhood. The houses were the rich part of town back in the day and these particular homeowners were wealthy enough to have their own pump at home. It was in their garage since the 1940’s.
The current homeowners were selling the pump because the local building dept made them dig up the holding tank under the cement floor in the garage (due to contamination). If I remember correctly I think they told me the bill was $40,000 (tear up the floor, support the structure, pay for contaminated dirt removal and then pour a new floor)!

Companies making curbside or blind pumps made two models, an outdoor model and an indoor model. As stated above, only the well to do people had gas pumps inside their garages. The Underwriters Laboratory tag indicated whether the pump was approved for indoor or outdoor use.

I'm completely fascinated with this. Also ammo for having a gas pump displayed in the living room!
