A friend of a friend has this sign and pole he just got and asked if I'd be interested since I collect Texaco. It's a size I've never seen in my limited time of collecting. I figured it'd be best to check with some of the Texaco experts and more seasoned collectors here before I pull the trigger. It's 30" and I believe single sided. I tried searching and couldn't find anything this size. Could it be a Canadian or other non US market sign? My question's are, is it authentic and what's it worth? He's asking $1,300 for the sign with pole. I appreciate and look forward to hearing others opinions. Thank you!

I think that's the inside circle of a 42" sign cut out......I'm at work now or I'd measure mine at home to be sure. If it is indeed a cutout or piece of a larger sign, then the asking price would be quite high IMO. Darin

I didn't even think about measuring the inside of my 42". The pole and ring threw me off. Could that have been used for some other type of sign, and someone along the way cut the 42" Texaco down to fit it?

Look at the picture--doesn't look like a cut down to me? Be tough to have a black border all the way around in a cut down. Given the present condition, I doubt that its a reproduction, so my first thought is real. My question would be why single sided in a pole structure, unless there were 2 back to back? If Randy has an original example, that should verify the existence? Maybe it should be remeasured? 1/4 inch difference?

A 42" has the black border around the white area that contains the star.......Cut where the red meets the black and you have an outside black border. But from what my eyes see it looks like a lot of missing porcelain around the perimeter, indicative of a rough cut. Just my opinions but I'm not holding it. Not my sign below but wording lines up in exact spots as the sign in question.

this is the sign which I measured the center & got the 29 3/4" & re-checked with same results notice: this is the Texaco Motor Oil version the gasoline/motor oil version may have a different measurement as I can't get too that one the black border on the sign of subject seems thicker .. ...

I appreciate everyone's thought's and opinions. I'm thinking for sure it's a 42" cut down now. I'm probably going to go take a look anyways (only 20 min from me) just to verify what the outer edge looks like. I'm also a bit curious what the pole looks like up close. That might be a homemade deal as well. I'm for sure not interested in a cut down for that kind of money. I was thinking (dreaming) maybe it was some ultra rare version well worth the $1,300, but I guess I'll have to dream another day lol. Thanks again everyone!

Here's a quick photo of my barn hanger 42" single sided Gasoline version. Upon another close inspection of the original photo I posted of the sign in question, you can see the black border seems a bit wider on the bottom and right? Might just be the angle of the picture though.

thickness of border on mine is 1/4" .. ... once you hold sign of subject & run your hand around the otter diameter you'll know if its been cut out or not..

The way the bottom two points of the star go into the text, the way the red 'settles' in to the top of the 'X'. It's a cut down 42"
The sign in question only APPEARS to have a thicker black border than 42". If you look closely and zoom in, what appears to be a black border on most of the sign, is actually bare steel. The sign in question may have been cut down 1/8" into the red, as I see NO porcelain at all within an 1/8" of the edge. If you look closely the thickest portion of black border is in the lower left near the word 'MADE' and the black still doesn't go to the edge, it is chipped there as well (approx. 1/8" from the edge). All of the black on the right side of the sign is pretty much all bare steel. In-fact most of the border is bare steel (chipped porcelain).
Your sign would have also been cut from the example on the right in my photo, because it says "REG US PAT OFF". The one on the right is the older sign from (approx.) 1929-1935, which was usually single sided, which makes sense with the sign in question (This is not always the case though - there are DSP signs before 1935). After 1935 they generally used the double-sided "REG TM".
I don't know if any of that made sense, but it is definitely a cut down 42".
And to answer your question.... definitely not worth $1300.
My 2 cents, Steve
Here are two of mine for reference....
