Claes:
Not real sure about that one.
The actual sign itself looks correct. It has a correct looking backside and seems to show some 'age' - but the "Mobiloil" lettering at the bottom looks computer-generated to me?
And the sizes/number and spacing of the holes around the outer edge is wierd.
That being said - the dude 'guarantees it' . . .
Later . . .
Jim

THAT MAKES 2 OF US. COULD IT HAVE BEEN MADE FOR USE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? I MEAN I BOUGHT A MOBILOIL SHIELD FROM URUGUAY ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO. I HAD NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE EITHER.
THE LACK OF THE N.Y. MENTION AND U.S.A. PRESENT MAKES ME THINK THAT IT IS FOREIGN. SOUTH AMERICAN? (NOT TREASURERAY ARGENTENIAN). JUST THE BACK ALONE MAKES ME THINK IT'S REAL. HOWEVER, I AM NOT SURE.
MAYBE SOME MOBIL PROS WILL STEP IN AND OFFER SOME REAL INFO IF THEY CAN.

Jim, I too think it looks pretty much OK. You mention the Mobiloil text, but I have more problems with the GASOLINE text that I think look like a steel from some other sign. The number of holes around the edges are OK to me, as our signs of this appproximate size often were hung in a pair and screwed together (I'm hoping to buy on right now ;-) )IMO it looks good, but as I have been here and on ebay for ten years and never seen one I felt I had to ask for advise. thanks Claes

MAYBE SOME MOBIL PROS WILL STEP IN AND OFFER SOME REAL INFO IF THEY CAN. It clearly shows Rochester U.S.A. & I don't think its Rochester Mn.LOL.I think it is from the U.S.A., great sign & I would not be afraid to buy as 100% original & from U.S.A.

Why would it say Rochester, USA? That makes no sense.
Either: city/state or state/country
not city/country
I only see that on other questionable Gargoyle signs.
Font experts we need an answer....

It reminds me of the Gargoyle football shaped sign that showed up years ago. Only said Rochester USA on it. As we all know they were all fakes. Also Gargoyle was from around Rochester NY. The only thing I have a question about is the font on the word Rochester, looks kinda newer to me. I am no expert on fonts though. Mark are you out there???

I don't think the "Rochester USA" is of any concern at all. Here's an old Vacuum can with the same designation.....plus I have at least 8 other "square" cans and a couple signs that are marked "New York, USA". The company headquarters moved from Rochester to New York City at some point, thus the change. All that being said, I think that sign belongs in MY collection, so I encourage all of you to beware, it still could be a fake!!! Richard

Thanks Pegasus, I looked on the net for an example and couldnt find it. Still makes no sense-English wise having city/country and no state.
Yes with all the repos being currently manufactured/sold as OLD, we are VERY suspect of stuff we havent seen before. It is sad but the world this hobby lives in.

Mark are you out there??? ...John, it all looks hand-generated to me, there are lots of inconsistencies between the letters that you would expect if the original artwork was hand-lettered...pick a letter (like the capital A) and compare them against each other, they're all a little different...if typeset on a computer, they'd all be the same...I can't find anything on that sign that says 'computer type'...for what it's worth, I think it's right...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Sure Richard, I'll show it. They are available every now and then over here. I have had several chances of buying one before but for different reasons it didn't happen until now. I'll keep a look out for you if you like it. br Claes

If you think that's strange, you'll love this.....I have at least a dozen SOCONY cans (standard oil of new york) that show only the street address (26 Broadway) and not the city, state, or country. Almost all of the dark blue SOCONY cans of various shapes and sizes are marked that way. I guess they figured everyone would know it meant the "Broadway" in New York City!!
