Ok...I know its a general NO NO, but I have some signs that have rotted holes and was to make new safe holes. What should be used...A diamond Tile bit, or Kobalt Drill bit...What do the pros use?
Let me know and appreciate it. If you would not want to help...think of it more as saving a sign from destruction if I do it wrong...

ceramic drill bit (or a diamond-tipped hole saw)
use duct tape on surface to keep the bit from 'walking' when you start
(same process that's used for tile, sink, tubs, etc)

Do you mean the goofy looking ones that actually do not resemble a bit...more like a small hole saw

yes... they look like a little bit like a mix between the two... and the diamond tip ones look like a normal hole saw.
with ceramics, you go slower, not faster.
I am speaking from very little experience too!... so take my advice lightly, I'd research the net for some tips
drilling thru a sign may require multiple steps, one to get thru the porcelain, the other to get thru the steel

Ad some tap oil to keep the drill bit cooler.

If your going to hang the sign up, why not simply drill screws into the wall, with washers that overlap the sign, and hold it in place withougt new holes? Whatever you do, do yourself a favor and wear a respiratory mask while doing the drilling!

Good oil cans don't wait for people, people wait for them.

Can anyone that went to Columbus Gas Show recall seeing the huge trailer and revolving neon sign? They were selling porcelain/neon signs. I asked the gentlemen how they would drill porcelain. Need 1/2 inch hole ? Drill 1/2 inch thick wood board with 1/2 inch drill bit. Clamp board to porcelain at point you want to drill hole. Sandblast porcelain through hole in board , removing porcelain coating. Remove board . Mark hole and drill hole with metal drill bit. That's the lil bit I know about it !!Dan

I have replied to pretty much the same question before. My neon guy uses a Dremel tool to first remove the porcelain.

I'll jump in the fray. I have an original neon sign that had tabs on the back to attach the can. Ninety percent of the tabs are gone. I dont know of any process I could use to re-attach tabs without drilling holes through the porcelain. If you know an alternative I would love to hear it. It's got to be strong, the sign and can will be hefty and I don't want to find it laying on the floor in a pile of rubble.

Do you mean tabs on the edges or just the flat back of the sign?

Tabs on the edge, back side. Come off sign at 90 degrees, can mounts to tabs. I plan to drill 1/4" holes and screw directly to flange on can I'm making.

A half inch hole isnt very big. By the time you put a grommet in there you have a smaller hole- like for hanging. When they punch for neon, doesnt it require a larger hole? like 1" or something like that? A good-even just decent, diamond core bit should go through just about anything-cooled with water. Porcelain is hard, but diamonds are harder. You would be best to use drill press type rig.Whats that they say about haters? Haters gonna hate. Fakers gonna punch. Crooks gonna hamma. PS-I hate punchin.
