Hello everyone. Trying to determine if these are somewhat rarer cans? NOT looking for a $$ value, just your thoughts on rarity, if you have one or have seen any?

I am thinking these are from the early 1930's maybe earlier? They are both US cans.

I haven't found a Silver Shell like this anywhere. It's a 5 gallon oil can. Pontoklene? I can't find a thing on them. I see one can was on here some time ago, but no info on it.

When did Shell start marketing Silver Shell? I have checked the auctioneer sites and have been tracking Feebay for awhile and I can't find anything.

Thanks everyone.

The silver Shell is a scarce can. That one looks in excellent shape for the age of the can. It is an earlier shell can. I dont know the year it came out. but i would say 30's on a guess.

Like i said, I am not a shell guy but i know it is a scarcer can. I collect Mobil and Sinclair so hopefully a Shell guy can put in more input.

The other can i have no clue on..

Good luck

I have seen many two gallon Silver Shell cans but not a five gallon. I have a two gallon with the can blue instead of silver and that version seams to be rarer

Thanks. Have you seen others? Because I have not. Just curious. I haven't heard a thing on this Pontoklene from anyone.

It's a neat can with a great old car graphic. Mine even has some contents left in it.

I would empty it and clean it out and here is why...

Some of those old car cleaners eat right through the seams of the can and tare up the paint. I had a mobilgloss can that was mostly full and i started to clean it and BAM!!! the litho was gone. The sad thing is that it was a very nice can and you would have never known it was damaged until you touch that area.

Darin Sheffer told me to empty them because he has heard from some that the stuff is the reason for the paint getting soft and ruining the can.
