I believe this would have been called a dry hose. Visible gas pump era. No expert by no means just my thoughts.

Correct. This is a banana nozzle. It was used on dry hose visible gas pumps. Dry hose versions had a manual cutoff valve at the jar discharge pipe. Nozzle installed into gas tank. Lever opened as gas left cylinder. Valve closed when desired number of gasoline achieved. Easy and quick. Paul www.severngaspumps.com
