I recently acquired these two lamps. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I found it interested that they are marked Right/Left There is not much on the inside. Just a metal screen and there is no oil/fuel reservoir. What lit these? Any idea if the top comes off? Any idea of date?

Hi Steven. Possibly railroad marker lanterns that were on the back of cabooses? It’s cool that you have a set of them. Here is a link of lantern info: http://www.railroadiana.org/lamps/pgLamps.phpBrian

Yes, caboose lanterns, not switch lanterns. In a lot of lanterns, the fuel was replaceable canisters. May have been the case here, and they are just gone.

A small can/wick sort of thing that just sat in that metal basket in there. And I figured probably caboose. I have another caboose lantern, but it has a bracket on it for sliding into some kind of mount on side of car.

I have some caboose lanterns somewhere, with the canister still in them.
