Hi all. I got this sign recently from a small auto repair business close to me. I did some research online and found another one that sold at auction but it did not have the riveted “tool holder” on the front of the sign. I also got the Hunter brand alignment gauge which is what I was told hangs off of this piece on the sign. Does anyone have experience on how the gauge goes on this piece or any other history/value of this sign?

Here it is cleaned up and degreased a bit...pay no attention to the Kumho tire sign; it was basically a throw in item.

looks to me like the rack was added to the sign later in it's life. It doesn't belong there - you can't read all of the copy on the sign with it in place. I don't really have a value for it- but I do collect old automotive equipment so I'd be interested if you decide to sell.....

Here is the same sign from an auction house website. You can tell the rack has been removed.

That tool rack is probably mounted upside-down. Judging from the length of the brackets, if you turn it upside down it would be lower and out of the printed area. You may have to unbolt the tray, and flip it around as well.
I don’t know this for a fact, but it seems to make more sense. Like signs&neons said, it would never be designed to go over the print, but I do believe it may be original to the sign, because the others have the same mounting holes.
My 2 cents, Steve

Your rack shows up in a October, 1962 Hunter ad. It is a small picture, but it matches your rack, except the area that is yellow shows up a gray, probably the was dune to better show the pieces of equipment that should be on the rack. The red bar does not belong on the rack, it is some other picece of equipment. What should be on the rack is the "NEW (1962) MECHANICAL WHEEL ALIGNER THAT REALLY DOES THE WHOLE JOB!" incidentally, both Hunter and Lincoln"s offices are about two miles from where I live here in St. Louis.
