Interesting story on this crate. Years ago I had a friend of mine who ran into a few of these early crates on a picking run, at a farmhouse in Wis. Apparently, the owner told him that the set had been used years ago as voting boxes, for a local mayoral election, hence the slot on top of the box. Since you don't usually find these crates with the top's on them, my friend convinced the guy to sell him two of them. Years, later I was able to get one myself. Unfortunately, due to a move, I'm letting this one go. I've never tried to clean it up, having been put in storage the second I got it, although I think it would clean up nicely. These are getting harder to find, in any decent shape.
