I apologize for this lengthy message but I'm looking for help on a recent purchase.
I won an eveready sign in an online auction this weekend and I am now concerned that its a fake or fantasy piece. Its the yellow version that measures 42 x 18 inches. Initially, I thought it checked out because I saw the same sign (different color) was sold in a Morphy Auction about a year ago. However, after I won the item, I became more suspicious when I looked at the photos more carefully (I'm kicking myself for not doing this before I bid) because I noticed that the lettering seemed a little sloppy. After doing some more digging online, I came across some info that I think confirms my suspicions.
An oldgas discussion from 2007 makes reference to this type of sign as a fake:
http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=30279&page=1

I have not yet paid for the item, however, if I dispute it, I'm at risk of being banned from the online host auction site. I should also mention that the auctioneer description did not date the sign - they only mentioned that it came in several colors.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Joe

I believe the writing at the bottom should be script.

At first look it just doesn't look right to me ! I have always felt if my initial thought was that it just doesn't look right it usually turns out to be fake ? Just my opinion.

I'm concerned about whether the writing on the bottom should be script or not. But I have come across others (on ebay) that are block letters also, including a yellow version.

I should have posted this earlier but here's the photo of the back. Is the patterning due to the firing of the porcelain?

The only original of this sign that I've seen; had a blue background and one could easily and plainly read "Eveready" on the blue shield of the batteries..... And as been noted; the writing at the bottom of the sign was in script not block lettering...

Here are the Eveready signs that I have. I believe all the 14 by 42 signs are repo., in any color. I have the blue version, pictured to the far left. They have been around for at least 15 plus years. First one I saw was at a room to room swap meet in Roanoke Va. The guy wanted 800 for it. I really liked it but could not afford it at the time. I gave 600 for this one many years ago.

Compare this sign to the ones to the right. Size is different, shade of blue is different, back is different. The back is the same as many of the other repo's that have been showing up.

I had one a long time ago that had a brown background and was told it came from Europe, don't know how accurate that is though.

Everyone,
Thanks for all the feedback. Unfortunately it confirmed my suspicions but still appreciated.
