Ran across a Texaco Fire Chief sign today and thought about picking it up. Then after looking at it the porcelain seemed so shiny, but the patina did look aged with porcelain chips, etc.

My question is regarding the high number of Fire Chief signs for sale on ebay in general. Is there really that many signs that are original or are we dealing with re-pops that are being aged very cleverly?

IMO, you're talking about a company that produced the standard 12X18 inch sign from 1940 to the mid 60's, that is a LONG time to make the same design sign with only minor date code changes, so there were/are lots of them surviving. Obviously yes, the signs are reproduced and people who don't do their due research are paying prices they could have bought an original for.
The sign you are showing is original by the way...

Not to mention that Texaco had a lot of gas stations back in the day as they were the first and only selling in all 50 States.
