Anyone ever experience this before?
A few years back, I bought a pretty darn nice LION lens to complete a globe I had. For about 2 years, it was on a shelf in my office in the house.
From there it went out to my shop to sit on an elevated globe shelf that sits about 9 feet in the air, and has been there untouched for about another 2 years.
Yesterday I climbed up a ladder to photograph the globe for a potential customer, and I saw that the front lens was cracked! It had cracked right at one of the mounting slots and had not fallen off the globe. I was shocked to see this and wiggled the pieces loose to keep from totally destroying them.
I suppose I had tightened the mounting screw too much initially, and over time, the glass simply cracked? Maybe there was a defect in the glass? Temperature changes might have affected it, although it stays at 50 during the winter and doesn't get much over 70 in the summer.
Anyone have any ideas or similar experience??

Most likely caused by over tightening the screw on the right.

About two years ago I restored a Clockface for a client in Mobil. I used an aftermarket milkglass body and repro lenses. Put everything together and took pictures to send the customer. Shop was around 70, which is normal. Next morning, one side was cracked....I think I over tightened the nuts as you might have. Mine were not nearly as costly as yours though. Well...when I first got a glass globe I put it together and set it in the corner of the basement while I did some other things and an hour later, I heard a "crack" and looked over at the globe and noticed a 1" crack at the right side screw where I apparently tightened it too much. frown Felt so stupid and 10 minutes later I was on a ladder loosening all the screws on my glass globes. I feel your anguish Kevin.

Looking for early valvoline, freedom-valvoline, franklin pa items, Galena

Man that really stinks Kevin. I don't have anything to add as to why it happened but it always makes me nervous when I hear stories like this. Every time I mount a set of lenses in a glass body I cringe when I snug up the screws never knowing if I'm tightening enough or too much. I always lean to the too loose side of things but it still seems that there should've been a better way to a secure glass to glass than two metal screws!....GB

I went to work on this lens a few days ago and used my super strength epoxy and glued it back together. It turned out pretty well, and you have to get awfully darn close to see the break! Looks like it used to up there on the shelf!

I always use small rubber washers against the lens and also on the back behind the nut just to give it some cushion for temperature expansion and just barely have them snug not tight by any means.

The rubber washer idea seems like a good one. I had those factory type fiber washers on the back side of this one.
