This sign was down in storage and during construction of the new addition on the house it collected some construction dust. The sign has a sand paper like texture on it and rubs off very easy. Just curious on how you guys would go about cleaning something like this? I was thinking compressed air. Kicking myself for not covering it up

you didn't hurt anything - probably squirt it off with the hose ...

I was thinking the same exact thing, just hose that down a little. Bet it washes right off. Those wrinkles finishes can get pretty fragile.

I have not owned one but have seen several that need a cleaning and always wondered if water would wash away the sand/glass??? If not, I would think a bath with Dawn dish soap would do the job??

This is a new one on me. So this is a porcelain sign with an 'on purpose' rough finish? Glass beads/dust in the porcelain?

Its not porcelain. Its a tin sign with im really not sure what it is but it feels like sand paper. And it comes off really easy if your not careful. The white outlines and lettering are reflective. Its really a neat sign. When this came available 2-3 years ago there were two, this one and the other had the dealerships name at the bottom. I should of grabbed both honestly.
I would think light compressed air or run water over it would work.

Here it is next to my 1926 car ad I just had framed in barn wood from Nebraska. I plan to move all my GM cans/tins over there also

Very nice sign and it sounds cool with it being reflective. If you have a chance and don't mind, would love to see a pic in the dark with light reflecting off of it.

The method of this signs construction is called smalts or smaltz. It can be other fine sand or finely ground glass. It was considered a premium sign in its day. More durable and longer lasting than a painted sign, and the added benefit in some cases of reflectivity. Cleaning decades old dirt and grime can be tough, but fresh dust should be easily taken care of with air first, then water. A soft brush used carefully with water and then rinse. Just keep a close eye on it to make sure you arent removing material. Let us know how it goes. Nice sign!

air & water are all i have personally used... have never scrubbed with anything, due to the fragile nature of the sand

On fragile surfaces, I always use a foaming automotive glass cleaner and then rinse it off with water. I find that, the foaming glass cleaner lifts the dirt up and away from the surface.

I'll try some of these ideas on mine too, it's 19 foot armstrong tire sign made of smaltz, except the letters, they're made of wood.
