I'll pass this time.
Wow, now I've seen it all!
I thought he was the expert on signs with writing a book and all... Do you really think he was fooled? Or perhaps he knows perfectly well...
Someone really needs to ask him...

Enlighten us,were these ever used as original? Why the low starting price if so rare?
Thanks.

I've explained repos on this for years, look them up for more answers.

Mint signs no grommets ?
The holes should be in the black border and white face, not so far into the white face.
The backs someone has taken a gridder to it, just like all the junk on ebay the last 6 months.
Look at the 3 on the date, seriously.
Above I listed just "SOME" of the junk from past auctions on ebay. I guess crates have been found after 83 years.

I just sent him a message telling him they are not real. We will see if he replies.
Which one of ya is going to step up to the plate and tell the original "Sign God" he is selling repops?
The auction # 390569887563 and image of the one Doug(Blacktee) posted first:

The auction # 300884879000 and plate image, Ron(Texacokie) asked about:

Hopefully this will help everyone see the differences "side by side".....

...I just wrote Rich as well, and told him they were fakes...

Thanks Bob.That helps a lot.I don't follow ebay enough to have learned how to do that.Maybe I had best learn!!LOL.Thanks again.

The 10 minute random grinder marks alone on it's backside is enough to deter me to not place a single bid on this.....LOL.
Thanks for the discussion, it's enlightening-I am not a Texaco guy but there are enough general lessons there that it bears repeating a few times a year for new members like myself. What about the Santa Fe sign in the background sitting precariously directly on its edge on concrete? Rough way to treat a valuable sign!

The trade mark should always tell you to stay away from any of those signs.
I just checked and ebay and I thought it was removed but alas not so- still there on second check

Its not the first time oldgas has schooled amistadi on selling repops.

He shows a lot of class by pulling the auction, maybe he can get his $$$$ back

The real lesson learned here is that you cant possibly know everything, no matter how long you have been in the hobby.
He should pull this one too!

Hi There

I have ended the auction. I hate to know that signs like these are being made in this unbelievable looking original condition and dated. I would never sell a repop as original. The sign god as some one said on old gas made a honest mistake. I purchased these signs on ebay and these signs look as right as rain. Its no wonder I want to get rid of every thing I own in porcelain. I'm sorry and I truly had no idea they are not real. I still can not believe it after seeing them in real life. They look and feel as nice as any old porcelain sign I have ever owned. Its scary to think they can make these old signs this good. Once again, thank you for the heads up I will eat my mistake and not contact the seller.

Have a good night and thank you once again.

Rich

Thank You Rich

I/WE couldn't ask for anything more from you. You made this as right as anyone can. Hope they didn't cost you too much.

Thanks Doug Doneth

Rich it has happened to the best of us on one occasion or another. I am just glad you stepped up to the plate and ended the auction when it was pointed out to you.

It makes our hobby just that much better!

Go back to the two pictures posted by Bob. Compare the letter C in Texaco. The dead give away right there. The fakes have a letter C that is curved all the way around at the top and bottom. ( think a letter O with a chunk cut out of the side) The original has a Letter C that does not curve all the way around at the top[ and bottom.
Other fake signs can also be spotted this way with the letters C,G and S
That letter style is known as Helvetica and was not developed until the late fifties. Even so it didn't get much use til the sixties and became widely used around the mid seventies when there was a lot of architectural signage being used. It seems that everything was being done in dark bronze and white.
I hope all that makes sense.

...the most important point...the artwork/stencils for early signs were created by hand...learn the differences and you've won half the battle...
Very Standup at this point from all parties in which all here should see from the sellers side and the ones with know how to spot these items. The good news, no name calling, just responsible posting.
