Got to give it to them. Keep out everyone with original stuff and look what the auction does for it. The prices for pumps and neon are just way over the top. Glad I got out of pedal cars 20 years ago, they are really taking a beating.

A friend just sent me this.Seems all the parking lots are full today. This was the last one with room, and the last bus to take them over there.

Pumps will too one day...just like vintage jukeboxes. What goes up eventually comes down. Dave

Craig, Thanks for posting. Just finished looking at the automobilia auction docket. Let's see what the rest of the week brings. So far looks like the hobby is doing pretty good. Except for pedal cars.

Waiting to see what the Esso aviation wings this year will bring. Looks different than last years.

Here again as usual ... great break from Ohio cold. Prices are stupid on most stuff, but there are some bargains to be had.

Just watched some of the auction and pumps brought crazy crazy money for very common restored pumps.
Posted By: Larry Nace Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Wed Jan 17 2018 05:36 PM
Done4, Here are some of the crazy prices:

1. Tokheim 39 tall. $32,200.00
2. Bowser 577. $28,750.00
3. Fry 117. $21,850.00
4. Wayne 70. $17,250.00
5. Tokheim 39. $11,500.00
6. Tokheim 300. $11,500.00

It just keeps getting better and better. Can't wait till tomorrow!
Posted By: Tankar Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Wed Jan 17 2018 05:57 PM
Wayne 70 17,250. ***** I sold mine to cheap. 😊
Posted By: Craig Osbeck Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Wed Jan 17 2018 06:38 PM
Just saw that, these guys are really either under educated in pumps or just without reason. Do you see why no vendor is allowed to sell original pumps and neon now .
I just can't believe it !!
A good Roman now would top 100K with these prices there.
Posted By: Cold Pizza Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Wed Jan 17 2018 08:16 PM
Can someone post what they believe are the more realistic prices of these:
1. Tokheim 39 tall. $32,200.00
2. Bowser 577. $28,750.00
3. Fry 117. $21,850.00
4. Wayne 70. $17,250.00
5. Tokheim 39. $11,500.00
6. Tokheim 300. $11,500.00

Good lawd......This is just friggen nuts!

If anyone's interested in my brush painted "restored" Tok 39 tall for $25,000, I might consider selling it. I might consider throwing in the original Shell clam globe too, lol!

I've heard that the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company closely controls who they allow to consign to the gas/oil auction. I believe they have a select, relatedly small number of almost "professional" consigners who will each bring many items for auction. In other words, I don't believe a common joe (like me) would have much luck trying to bring his one special pump or sign to sell at the auction.

This information may be out of date, and I'd welcome any "corrections" from someone with recent, firsthand experience with the B-J gas/oil auction. John

I believe you are spot on. Ron has gone for years and as he told me also, no private people with original stuff anymore.
Posted By: Cold Pizza Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Thu Jan 18 2018 01:29 AM
Rory Brinkman bought a few items from me recently, with the intent to sell @ B-J.
When I asked him if I can consign to sell them there instead,he replied,NO.
Posted By: Tankar Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Thu Jan 18 2018 01:46 AM
I know Rory as well and have sold him multiple items over the years. I have tried as well he said whomever consigned cars have first to put items in auction and rorys items.
Posted By: Craig Osbeck Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Thu Jan 18 2018 02:03 AM
Again it is a closed auction for everyone except the auction company. No problem, their auction, their stuff. Only problem is if you are a bidder and can't get anything but their stuff.
Then who really knows who you are bidding against.
Posted By: iowaoil Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Thu Jan 18 2018 03:24 AM
I just got home from Barrett-Jackson. Was my first time, and what a show it is.

I sold 2 items in Monday's auction and 6 items yesterday. Like any auction I've consigned to, had a couple of items I did well on, a couple i was even on, and took a beating on two of them. Overall, had fun and did fine.

I also talked to at least 3 other people with consignments in the auction.

I wanted to run a Dog N Suds neon, but he already had one consigned. I came up with other unique stuff and the items were accepted.

There is a whole different level of customer at this auction, and a gazillion people.

There were lots of hands in the air, seemed to me the vast majority of bids were onsite bidders.

Wow, that auction is getting crazy!! Few days left. I can't imagine what the rest of this stuff is going to go for.

I woulda bought the Husky, but I need two of them for where I want to display them. wink

Well is it a closed auction or open auction,i guess it depends on who you are.
Posted By: Cold Pizza Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 12:59 PM
I never trust any auction houses telephone bidders.I'll bet 9 X out of 10 there is no one on the other end.
Meaning the auction house is involved in the shill bid.
Posted By: intagas Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 01:51 PM
Absolutly
Posted By: Cold Pizza Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 03:50 PM
Have to laugh @ some of their auctioneers fast talking comments in between the bidding:
"Think long,think wrong"
"Have another sip"
"50K to you touch of Grey"
"We have a stalker"
"Next time buy a clue"
"Well aren't you a Consignors Nightmare"
Posted By: Done4 Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 04:11 PM
After watching this mornings auction (burned an hour and half of my life) I was a little surprised at the uninteresting lots sold but yet brought big money. That Polly visible pump was a joke, rotating globe and all.
Posted By: Craig Osbeck Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 05:26 PM
Its all show and tell. Sorry many people that just do not know what they are buying.
Posted By: BryceG Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 05:39 PM
the auctions are so weird. one minute you have a person paying $20k for a restored Wayne 100B... the next minute a condition 8 Sinclair Aircraft sign is going for only $3500. So weird.

I bought one lot today, and felt like i got it for about half price. But yes, the pumps were laughable

Saturdays neon's should also be something to watch.
Posted By: Tankar Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 07:07 PM
I wish they would show memorabilia items selling but they never do.
Posted By: Cold Pizza Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Fri Jan 19 2018 07:14 PM
They do.
I watched the Memorabilia auctions from 8:30 AM to roughly 10:30 AM central time today & the days before it too.

Bryce- Yes I made a similar comment to Julie when I was looking at results. Some really good stuff seems to go under the money. Then a fantasy clock brings 4500.00. I really didnt even look today.
Posted By: gaspower Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Sat Jan 20 2018 04:33 AM
Esso Aviation fantasy neon sign brought $63,250 plus the juice.
Posted By: Craig Osbeck Re: Barrett Jackson what a show - Sat Jan 20 2018 12:37 PM
That sign I heard was 24ft long. Big sign, tough to place in your house for sure.

We should all start restoring Automobile merry go rounds. $485,000.00 without the premium. WOW

32K for a tall 39???
I guess Rod Serling is the auctioneer and Bozo's doing the bidding!!
One thing about this hobby, it's always good for a laugh.

The alcohol does seem to flow fairly freely there. Can't blame them, if I had an insane amount of money to burn and a few zombies in me I would be the one y'all would be talking about.

Looking back, the stuff seemed exceeding high for some and average for others. Does it make everyones stuff worth more ? Maybe or Maybe not, hard to gauge if someone uses that as a scale to draw from. As Ron Henderson always told me, Willing buyer and willing seller, and each time he goes it seems different.
