Also, his pump has stuck. he said the pump's previous owner said it hasn't been very long since it worked. Could he remedy this by removing large nut, remove packing and shooting it full of penetrating oil, automatic tranny fluid???
He is hoping he doesn't have to remove the skins and tear down the pump mechanism.
Any suggestions?

Removing the Packing nut & packing MIGHT free up the shaft. To free up the pump vane, you'll need to remove pump mech or top of pump to pour Tranny Fluid [2 qts]in FILL Pipe.
