Well after reading the the guaranteed measure GLobe thread a few months ago and after buying a rough Fry 73 pump top from Owen, I had an idea.

I really liked the original Guaranteed Measure Globe with the punched letters. So I decided to make my own lenses.

I hand measured, hand painted, and hand punched each lens. I like the weathered look so I let the red show through the almond paint on the letters and I didn't sand or fix any blemishes or chipped paint in the punch holes.

These are 15" lenses in an old rough globe body I had.

Then I had another idea but I thought I had better let you guys see them first. I thought I might make a limited number of these to sell, but only if there was enough interest.

So anyway, What do you think? Good enough the sell? What would be a decent price to ask?

Nice job. You should show a picture of it lit ,in the dark. If I had a Fry, I'd go for a set of those.... Hard to tell, are they drilled or punched?

There was another fellow that had some homemade punched lenses on Ebay but for a different company. This was about a year ago, and he started out pretty high and eventually dropped the price to $50 each. Don't know if he sold any but his continuous ad on Ebay, with the price going down all the time, made me think he wasn't selling any.
I think they look good and depending on price, you'd probably sell a few. I guess if it was me, I'd do it on an order only basis. Be sure to mark them as reproductions as I can see someone thinking they found a real treasure about 40 years from now! Good Luck!

I hand punched each hole the " ole fashioned" way. If I do sell any I will definitely put reproduction on the with a date on each lens. Thanks for the encouragement.

My thread got moved to the for sale section even though I wanted feedback first. That's why I posted it in the showcase category. But oh well

Humfleet:

I do beleive that the original 'punched' lenses did not feature just a punched hole - but were punched to leave a 'flap' on the inside of the lens to reflect the light outward.

I think the punch left a 'C' shaped hole with what would be the opening of the 'C' facing straight up.

Later . . .

Jim
