Mobil shields have no date ,and no IR mark Get YOUR FACTS Correct, BEFORE POSTING. NOT ALL MOBIL SHIELDS are IR, McMATH-AXILROD or DATED. West Coast Shields ARE Different than Texas/East Coast.

And you wonder why so many new guys do not know what is real or fake. What was fake in 1970 is now real to young people.

We all realize the problems with these reproductions and you're right, there is no one person "in charge". The reality of it all is that you're dealing with other peoples business and if you're going to make an accusation-- be sure that you know your subject inside and out! There is no need for being confrontational!

I don't think Dick is backing this guy up for selling fakes. He is just saying that some plates don't have makers marks or dates ie: the west coast plates. This makes since for Dick to say that cause he sees more of them in his region. Here is west coast plate like Dick was saying. I don't see any marks...

The two Mobilgas signs in question are reproduction signs, readily available from any of the parts dealers or on Ebay for $25. Not all of these reproduction signs are marked with the "licensed by Mobil Corp" wording between the lower point and the lower right point. I see both unmarked and licensed reproductions available on Ebay almost all the time. I believe the point DB was making is that there were/are many, many variations of Mobil pump plates made over the years. While I'm sure Billy is speaking of the WIDE blue border plates in question, the statement Dick made is correct. We/Collectors know as a "general rule of thumb" that the WIDE blue border pump plates should have the IR date code near the lower right grommet. It is possible that with the many thousands of plates made in the 40's/early 50's that an unmarked plate slipped through production, but IMO 99.9% of undated WIDE blue border plates are reproductions, no question, whether they are marked as such or not. With the many dated originals available, why take the chance buying an undated one, "hoping" it could be or IS the real deal? I wouldn't ever spend more than $25 for an undated WIDE blue border plate, period, but that's just me. If I need to clarify anything, let me know. It's late and my initial response that was better thought out disappeared from my screen and I had to start over! Darin

IMO the 2 Mobil signs are repo's. Both Dick and Darin are correct.....most Mobil pump plates are dated or manufacturer marked, but not all. For reference I suggest you check out the completed auction section on Matthews auction site for the CTO auction last month. There were a number of the blue-border plates in the auction, and all are pictured there. All the USA plates were marked except for lot# 40. As mentioned, the west coast versions with black rather than blue borders aren't marked. The Matthews Auction catalog for the Iowa Gas auction also has quite a few Mobil pump plates, mostly west coast and southwest versions, and you can see in the pictures how they are marked....or not.

I believe the photo is a Mcmath -Axilrod .Yhey have a slightly different shape than the IR .I have both .The Mc-Ax is larger also .And I have never seen a mc-Ax that had a date .By the same token I have never seen an IR that was not dated .

I didn't say anything about All Mobil shields having dates .I was just talking about these two fakes .It is obvious that they are repops of IR signs .As I said I have never seen an IR that did not have a date .
