Tailgate down does not make a very good rear bumper.Replaced alot of them when I was in bodyshop,inc my truck.

Either way, excellent question Nicole. That's one of those things I've always wondered about but never asked or knew who to ask. Big brain fart on my part to not think about mythbusters lookig into it.

Personally I hate the tailgate bouncing around so I leave it up.

On my S-10, Topper on, level with top of cab gets me +2 mpg.
Tailgate down gets me -1 mpg as opposed to tailgate up.
