In the 1940's after WWII. Indianapolis was the "Terminous" point for several major pipelines. From Indianapolis, petroleum products were distbuted by Rail to the East.
Shell - Wood River
Standard Oil - Whiting
Ohio Oil - Robinson
were some of the big Refineries that were linked. There were / are others.
At it's peak,there were 15 major Petoleum Companies with terminals in the Indianapolis area. Today 13 of those terminals are still in operation, but most have different owners now.
