Hello All,
I found this locally in an antique mall today. I didn't buy it because I haven't really been in the market for one until I found this one. Mint condition, heavy shelving. There are 3 holes at the 2, 6, and 10 positions, and probably around 7"+ in diameter, but I didn't have a measuring device. The spots on the bottom are dirt. Was priced at $80, and I could get 10% off of it but it still seemed a bit high to me. Any help would be nice as I would like to go grab it tomorrow if it's worth it. I like it, but want to make a more educated buy. I didn't find any like it in Ebay completeds, where I generally check for general pricing.
Thanks for any help,
Darin

At that price, I would be all over it. They sell upwards to $200 in mint condition

I'm pretty sure that is not real. The holes are in the wrong position. The real ones that I have seen the holes were at the 12,4, 8, positions and also say " Made In USA " and some of them are even dated on the bottom.

Uh oh....the mystery deepens. I guess I better pass until I can learn more about these particular signs. Better safe than sorry I guess.
Any more opinions would be great, and thanks to those who already posted.

By the way, the thing I noticed about the known repro on Ebay is that there is more wording in the yellow box than the one I posted and it's 8". The repro says ETHYL GASOLINE CORPORATION NEW YORK, U.S.A., while this one just says ETHYL CORPORATION. Any ideas on that difference and would that help with knowing a repro vs. original?

According to Guide To Gas Pump Restoration book. The older one's have more wording on them ( ETHYL GASOLINE CORPORATION NEW YORK USA
8" 1926-1942 And the later one's like yours ( ETHYL CORPORATION ) 8" 1942-1964
I may have jumped the gun on this one. Maybe they made the holes both positions.
Let's see if any of the other guys chime in.

It is no steal, worth 80-100 in the "Real World" of Gas shows and auctions.

Must be this isn't a real world auction, lol?! smile
Ebay item 120786522037 YIKES!

BTW, I ended up purchasing the sign for $72. Upon closer inspection I have no doubt this one is genuine. The shelving is super and there was oxidation and dirt that couldn't be replicated overnight on the back of the sign where it was attached to a pump.
Thanks for the help on the sign everyone.
Darin

Well, I've looked at all the repro dealers and do not see this version available. The wording is different as well as the word "ETHYL" is in quotations, different from any repro I've seen out there. I'm aware of the one on Ebay with the different hole placement. Unless this is a one off repro I still feel confident it's genuine. Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Darin
