Can anyone tell me about the quart size can below from Reliable Motor Oil? And possibly what would be a retail price from a collectors view? Many thanks!!!

Welcome to Oldgas.com Shop Talk

Composite cans (some call them cardboard) have value to collectors if they have appealing graphics, are from a sought-after company and are in a "decent display" condition. For the most part, metal cans are preferred by collectors over composite.

Sorry to report that your can, in its poor condition, would probably be a tough sell at any price.

...can't tell you anything about the value - but I sold Wayne Henderson a 2 gallon can with a similar design, and I believe he told me it was a brand sold at Spur stations...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Like Jim stated above. Composite cans carry less value then metal cans. Condition is very important. In that condition, it has minimal value.

Thanks for the quick reply... I have a couple of more pics if you don't mind giving me info about. (I am a new collector as you can probably tell). The picture below with the 5 gallon gulf buckets, and the quart Gulf cans above it.. I am thinking about making a purchase but don't want to overpay for the lot. What are your thoughts about these? Ideally, I would like to purchase and sell the extra to make back most of what I paid. Sorry for the low quality pic.

If you plan to resell, you have to do your homework so you don't get in too deep. Go to eBay Completed Auctions:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/ebayadvsearch/

Search for these words:
gulf oil 5 can

Note that many that were listed did not sell at the minimum bid.

Jeremy, welcome to Oldgas and to the Petro Hobby!

I am going to ask a rhetorical question that I hope you will think long and hard about...

Why buy ten $10 cans; instead of buying one $100 can?

I can't imagine that you would buy ten "rusty beaters"; instead of one good vehicle...

That you would buy ten cheap broken down chairs instead of one good sturdy one...

It is the same with Petro items...

Too many new Collectors pick up marginal items, because they have "Caught the fever" and want to jump right into the Hobby...

Many have/had the same idea as you have... I will buy some items, keep the ones I want and sell the rest.... And that is a good idea... If the items are in good condition... And rusty, dented cans.... Are not good or in good condition, 99+% of the time...

Collectors who have time in the Hobby; For the most part are not going to buy marginal items... They want substance, items that are worth what they are paying for them...

The items you are asking about, are not those items!

Thank you all for the advice... I really appreciate it... I'm looking to dress the man cave with an oil & gas theme... I work for Marathon Petroleum Company; hence the industry pays my bills. So with that said, I am looking for Marathon items but would like to add other brands as well. I will continue on my homework. I believe I want an assortment of appearance conditions-- The old rustic look, the mid grade look, and then of course the best of the best. I also like to trade and resell when the opportunity arises. Again, thank you all for the advice and I really like the forum. Should see me around often!!

I had met a guy from La. who drove a Ferrari Boxer to a show here in Jackson and he worked for Marathon. Couldn't find his card to check the name. Welcome to Old Gas.
