I've done two of these pumps. I used the rivets, even with the rivets it is tricky to get the weatherstrip to form properly around the top corners of the doors. Sharp radius corner for a flat weatherstrip. I think if you used adhesive only, those corners would be a problem. Bear in mind, adhesives work very well and have amazing bonding strength. The bond between the weatherstrip, adhesive and paint will be stronger than the bond between primer and paint. If the weatherstrip pulls away it will probably cause the paint to lift.
I agree with Paul that on this particular model the weatherstrip doesn't enhance the appearance of the pump. I concur with his advice to just not use the weatherstrip.
