Rex -

INDIAN REFINING COMPANY, Incorporated added the "dots" inside the "D" and above the second "I" in order to more closely identify INDIAN Gasoline with HAVOLINE Oil (which, of course, was also their product).

The HAVOLINE logo had always contained dots within the "O" and above the "I" since its inception as a product of The Havemeyer Oil Company. Something which I had long suspected - and which was confirmed in a conversation which I had recently with the great-grandson of John F. Havemeyer, the company's president - was that the dot within the "O" was intended to place emphasis on that letter. It seems that Mr. Havemeyer actually wanted the name pronounced "HAV-oh-leen", rather than "HAV-uh-lun".

These are the last three signs I have to post for SOTM. I will be leaving on a trip until the 11th of July and get back to take off for the Solvang gas bash. Scott Shipers will launch SOTM for July. Until I return keep on hunting for the great find. Ted

Interesting I did this search today. I just looked at a gasoline globe, reverse painted domed, double sided in metal frame. It has Indian on top, Gasoline on bottom and an Indian in orange paint, full body figure in the center. It's rough shape, as one side has most all the paint off and it's peeling off the other side. I may be able to buy it and was wondering approximate resale value. Thanks. DJ
