Well i hope everyone has a good idea of what globe is what. I hope everyone has an idea of what a hull globe is and a gills.

This month we are going to do shelves. Lets see the shelves everyone has built to display there collections. I don't care if it's 1 globe or 100 i want to see them. I have seen lots of collections and everyone has some good ideas.

If anyone needs help posting you can send the pictures to me and i will post them for you.

Let expand on the shelf... tell how you wired them and what lights your using.

This should be good. Ive seen some great ideas out there and it would be nice to have all the ideas in one place so I can refer to it when Im ready to build mine!

Here's a shot of part of mine.


I wanted my shelves to be deep to help protect the globes from accidently getting bumped into.
I used standards and seperate brackets. For the shelves themselves I used two layers 1X6's and 1X12's. The bottom layer has the 1X6 in back and the 1X12 in front. The top layer is staggered in that the 1X12 is in back and the 1X6 in front. I plowed a channel in the bottom side of the top 1X12 for the wiring to run in. After figuring out the spacing I drilled holes for the wiring for each of the 26 fixtures. For the wiring iteslf I used 12 gauge drop cord. I mounted 1/2" deep junction boxes to the shelves, then wove the wire up into the first box, then back down into the channel and over to the next box. I left enough slack sticking up at each box to make the electrical connections to the fixture. Next, I mounted my globe rings. Then I used simple porcelain light fixtures like you might find in an unfinished basement.
Each row of globes is on its own switch, but they are on the same circuit since 26 light bulbs don't draw very much current.

I'm very happy with this set up with one exception. Capco globes qon't clear the porcelain light fixtures. If I were to do it over I would use the smaller diameter junction boxes and light fixtures. They are harder to find, but they are available.

I've experimented with different wattage bulbs. Most of my globes have frosted 26 watt bulbs. A few have 41 watt bulbs. I've tried the small diameter flood bulbs. They don't last very long. I figured clear bulbs would bring the lolors out better. They do to an extent, but the filiment can cast a shadow on the lens making you think the Jarvis Jinx has struck. I've tried the cool white screw in flourescent bulbs. They looked ok in metal body globes but looked terrible in glass body globes. I haven't tried st soft white flourescents yet. I suspect I'll like them better.

I decided to build my shelf into the wall recessing the globes for display and the need for only brackets on one of the shelves. The room was all new construction paneled with wood from a barn we took down. Recessed ceiling lights with dimmers provide light shining down on my globes and I still need to add the same underneath the top shelf to light the lower row of globes. Fitters will also be added to keep the globes in place.

Here's my meager contribution. It's a free standing shelf made of 1x12 everything's dado'ed glued screwed filled primed and painted and hardboard in the rear to keep it square. The light plates are counterbored for the sockets and a router trough for the wiring. The bases are not fixed to the shelves so they may be moved for whatever reason.

This is how I display my globes. I am forever changing them around when I get a new one in so I wanted to have a fast and safe way to do so. The one draw back is that they are not lighted.


I use 1/2 AC plywood and cut strips at 30Degrees


I usually have two openings in the strip so I can take the globes out.


I keep saying I'm going to paint them but never get around to it. Richard

Now i know we have more globe shelves out there! I don't care if you have 3 common globes or 200 killer pieces. We want to see how they are displayed. Basement, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, garage?

Here is mine, this top shelve is made from 1x8 with a trim lip around it. I made it to look like a fireplace mantle using 1x4’s on the sides and the trim boards from home depot to deck it out like an antique mantle. The mirror is one of the 6.00 ones for doors from k-mart. This makes it look like the TV is not floating and gives the globes a good high place to be shown off in the house.

I only light the center globe “Tioga” with the small under cabinet lights from home depot.

Here is Savinsam on oldgas globe shelf. Sam writes "I used 1'x12" pine for shelf, then pieces of large corner round under the globes. This allows room for wiring underneath from globe to globe. Shelf sits high, can't see wiring."

I have seen many collectors putting cans with the globes.

Open to ideas of globe of the months before we go back to companys?

Thanks again JJ for bringing back GOTM. Wish I could help you with ideas but I think this months was great.
Here's what I did. My construction friends laugh at me but I used large corner braces for the shelving. Two reasons. One I aready had a bunch of them and two because it allowed me to put my can shelf and signs right under the globe shelf without dealing with the fatter shelf brackets. And they are strong. I could hang on them no problem when I put them up.


When I finished the garage I knew I would want to have some lighted signs, globes, tv, etc so I put a couple of outlets on the ceiling at each corner on their own switch.

So when I put up the shelf for globes I used something I had read about in PCM. I used the individual lighted candles you can buy around Christmas time. They have a heavy brass base and use 7 watt bulbs. The lights, a few cheapo power strips, and some globe rings and the globes were up and lit in a few hours. The excess cord I just wrapped around the candle and covered with the globe. I ran the cord under the globe rings which are screwed to the shelf. You could use these without globe rings by cutting a groove in the shelf for the cord to go under the globe body without tipping it.

The powerstrips and cords are somewhat visible but most people don't notice them. I thought they might be temporary but I don't really notice them either so they will probably stay.

I think they put out just the right amount of light. And with the candle the light is centered in the center of the globe.

LOOKING GOOD! I love them all lit up!

Copying this post from a previous one I did a few months back:

It started with my vision of making a globe shelf that met the following criteria (usually mutually exclusive):
1. Globes as close to ceiling as possible
2. Bulbs centered vertically inside globes

This design fit both of these criteria together. Plus, you can change the bulbs without touching the globes, and change the bulb height for different globes with little effort.

The shelf is supported by brackets on top, so there are no visible supports under it.

The globes are on a central dimmer, located in the back corner on the bottom side of the shelf.

The swing-down lower panels allow access to change the bulbs from underneath. You can also easily remove the individual "lamp modules" if they stop working or need to be switched to ones with different heights.



The shelves themselves each have Wiremold power outlet strips inside of them, allowing each lamp module to be unplugged, and preventing the flexing of wire nut connetions when changing bulbs.

Each lamp module is held in place by two thumb screws.





I guess the next step is to find more globes! The fantasy Oldsmobile Service has already been replaced with a Southern States Oil Co. on original red Capco.
