If its going inside, clean it very well, knock off any loose stuff, disassembly what you must, and coat with this stuff from O'Reilly. It's lacquer matte clear, super easy to spray.
Like Matt says going outside this won't hold up. An automotive type urethane clear is better. I would use something like this hot rod clear for outside. The amount of flat I use is usually 5 to 1 mix ratio to get a matte finish. I'm spraying some of this on a windmill tonight, hopefully it will hold up for a while! It should.
It will just slightly alter the appearance, slightly more contrast but its subtle. You can see some of this in my facebook page if you want.
I get that sometimes things need to be cleared for various reasons, where its going, shedding, etc.
