Open to thoughts & suggestions on preserving paint patina on an old pump.
It's 70% paint 30% rust. An outside pump so I would like to preserve the look.
Would a semi-flat clear coat be an option ?

Best thing to do is bring it inside. If you clear it, it will change the look even if you use semi flat. Another problem would be the clear going bad from being outside and then it would look like a modern with bad clear coat. It will turn a chalky white and then peal.

If its going inside, clean it very well, knock off any loose stuff, disassembly what you must, and coat with this stuff from O'Reilly. It's lacquer matte clear, super easy to spray.

Like Matt says going outside this won't hold up. An automotive type urethane clear is better. I would use something like this hot rod clear for outside. The amount of flat I use is usually 5 to 1 mix ratio to get a matte finish. I'm spraying some of this on a windmill tonight, hopefully it will hold up for a while! It should.

It will just slightly alter the appearance, slightly more contrast but its subtle. You can see some of this in my facebook page if you want.

I get that sometimes things need to be cleared for various reasons, where its going, shedding, etc.

I have an original Wayne 615 I bought and put outside my building about 10 years ago. I bought 3 cans of clearcoat at Walmart and sprayed it after I had cleaned loose stuff off. Still looks as good today as it did 10 years ago. No yellowing or discoloring.

If you want to keep the same look, don’t use matte or semi-gloss clear, they sell just plain flat. Both matte and flat look good, just depends on the look your going for. Just my two cents. I prefer flat, so it has the same patina and doesn’t have a sheen, however matte does look good in certain applications. All clears will darken the color slightly.

This is matte finish if you want to see an example. It darkens it a little, I like it but its a personal taste thing. Sorry I dont have a before picture.
