So I've had this in mind for some time and am finally getting around to it. The wood aging process was a fun learn. After many many test's, this is the final result on the project. The wood came with the old barn serrations in it which was really cool and then I carved in some deep groves and old nail holes and beat it up the edges with a big wood rasp. 1. is a steel wool and vinegar solution stain (youtube it) that was supposed to turn wood grey. But in my case it was turning it brown. But It was actually a good effect. 2. Diluted grey stain. 3. Diluted red paint. Found a color that best matched the actual piece of original red barn wood that I had. The graphic looking picture is what it will look like when done. I still need: American Strate globe. This one will be hard to come by!!! American globe in either red or yellow frame.
Amoco and American ad glass will be lit up in holes.

Looks good, great job. Did you use a latex paint? How did you get the matte finish?

They grey stain was oil base dilutes very much with paint thinner. but the red was flat finish latex also dilute quite a bit. I took this picture literally seconds after finishing the red. So I'm sure the shiny spots will go flat as they dry.

Funny you should ask. To heavy. It about 20 lbs I suppose. I was planning to run the wood through the saw and thin it up but just kind of forgot. I reinforced the upper outside corners where it will hang from so the load is in the sides. And there is a single solid panel on the sides behind the outside finish slat pieces. Believe me, I'll be absolutely sure it's not falling off the wall before I put the globes on!!!!

Looks cool Steve. Where did you get the raw lumber with the serrations already in it? Or did you do that?....

Looks cool Steve. Where did you get the raw lumber with the serrations already in it? Or did you do that?.... There's a salvage company not to far from me where I buy barn wood. But they didn't have any red. So the guy shows me this serrated stuff. He had a huge pile of it. I've never seen it before!! Very cool stuff. Someone had to make it. I plan to buy more. I'll ask them where the got it from.

If you use the vinegar and steel wool mixture along with the commercialy available water based aging stain (in grey), you'll get a more natural looking barn wood.
And you can weather the wood before any staining by using a brass wire brush attachment on your drill on the wood.
This will remove the soft wood and leave the harder sections intact - like nature does over decades of weather exposure.
Later . . .

Jim Interesting. Will look into aging stain next time. But, I'm very happy with results.
