Bases don’t get much better than this one,
Dan. What are the dimensions, cost &
shipping when you get that figured out.
I am interested depending on those factors.
Thanks.... Roger

Hi Dan,

Excellent idea for a great looking base. That base looks great and there is obviously a demand for it. I just have one request. Can you please put the date of manufacture on it, or the word "Reproduction"? RECESSED letters on the underside (or edge) would be ideal, raised letters can just be ground off. It would keep the values of originals accurate and prevent repops from being sold as originals in the future.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this concern.

Thanks,
Steve

...I agree with Steve as well - but probably not for the same reason...there's been a lot of discussion as to whether such an impractical, fancifully-decorated base was even used 'back in the day'...given that curb signs were meant for use at the curb, there isn't much point in a lot of wordy product descriptions...folks driving by would see the sign, but not slow down to read the base - and the sign was at the curb, where loitering customers wouldn't be looking for a sales message...

...also, the selection of terms seems suspect as well: 'tune-up', but no 'Marfak Lubrication'?...think about it: how many p.o.p. (point of purchase) consumer display materials have you seen for 'heater hose'?...

...bases were marked to identify the base as company property, in case they were reused with another brand - not for a sales pitch...rarely (if ever) was the embossed lettering highlighted with a contrasting paint, as it wasn't there for the consumer...the base was there to keep the sign vertical; the sign was there for the advertising message...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I always thought these were copied from a coca cola base then the lettering was added. In my opinion total fantasy.

I have heard the same as Mark about these possibly being fantasy pieces (I wasn’t sure if it was true, but Marks explanation above makes a ton of sense).

However, either way, I think marking them would still be the right thing to do - to prevent un-informed or new collectors from making the mistake of overpaying at an auction or somewhere else etc. etc.

Just my 2 cents
-Steve

It is definitely a fantasy piece. I’ve had this one for about 15 years and until this post I had forgot I even had it. I remember years ago there was a post about these bases and Dick Bennet stated they were made in Mexico. If you are going to recast them, I would definitely put a date on them.

...anyone notice the fonts used in the product/service words are mixed up?

...both serif AND sans serif fonts are used...pretty sure Texaco would have had something to say about that...and a reputable foundry 'back in the day' would have had compete cases of fonts, and wouldn't need to do this...

I have a couple of these under Texaco signs and I remember they have a raised 1939 somewhere on the bottom.I also measured them at one time, diameter, and one was a little smaller than the first one I had. The first one I`ve had at least 15 years. My question is basically: what is the diameter of the one being coppied,original???...thanks Tom

I will answere my own question on diameter....... Coca cola base is 22 even.....Texaco base #1 is 21 even....#2..is 20.75 inches.....I think Texacos are repos....because of the shrinkage in recast.

Waited till all comments were herd, to prevent shinking of an already small base will have to start fresh with a new base corrected with flaws and dated, although dates will always be ground off or filled, will always happen ! new base will be clean and sent to a good caster. more suggestions?

Harder to fill recessed letters. And if they are deep enough people will know where they were ground off.

However, it sounds like this base was a pure fantasy piece anyway.

Here's one a guy tried to sell me years ago for lots of money... And I didn't buy because I was certain it was a fantasy/repop piece. Glad I didn't buy it. Now I'm just mad at myself for not noticing the fonts, like Mark did.. LOL

I'll admit, the paint colors looked cool.

Mark if you was laying this out tell me why you wouldn't swap places with Batteries and Heater Hose, and drop Heater and add S to hose. Seems it would fit much better.
If your heater hose is new and everything other hose has a hole in it your in trouble.LOL!
I'm not going to beat it up it is what it is,I will beat up that red and white paint job . Looks like it needs to be displayed with a clown car! Too much going on for me, but you know what they say about opinions,
