I have two questions about a common Bennett 700 series pump.

1) Does anyone know if a cast aluminum base, a cast metal base, and a stamped steel base all mount to the frame rails the same way? In other words, will any 600 or 700 series base work on this pump? I need a new base.

2) Does any one know the specific model number. My tag is obliterated. The reason I ask, is because I cannot find the exact picture in Jack's book and I would like to know when I post it for sale. If you notice this is a short version and the hose outlet is up high on the side, unlike any in Jack's book. It also has the small window (no ad glass). This is not a big deal, just wondering if someone knew. Probably not a cut version either, since all the talls had ad glass. Maybe it's a 746 and the doors were replaced. Or just one of those things, as there were so many variations when ordered. I found another one in the picture commonly used in the CTO ads (pictured last - next to the Gulf pump).

Thanks,
Steve

Bennett 766. The pictures in Jack's books are drawings not actual pictures so the actual pumps may look slightly different. The manufactures also sometimes made slight changes in the pumps through the years such as your base.

Keith,

Thank you for the reply.

So will any of the three bases work?

And on a side note, I just acquired the globe in your avatar a few days ago on a Hull body. smile

This one is odd. I think it is a cut down 646, but it has a cable hose retracter. I never seen a 646 with the cable retracter. Short Bennett`s usually have the short steel base, not the tall cast base. Also they did not have the winged emblem and the door top has too much of a curve compared to other 700 series. There is a 746 model with the cable so maybe that is what it is if it is not a cut down 646.

I just recently bought it in a package deal. I’ll get into it this weekend and try to see if it’s cut down. I don’t know how good there craftsmanship was on a factory cut. In other words, will it be obvious??? Did they roll the bottoms of the doors all nice?? Are the bottoms of the rails rough??? Etc, etc.

I’ll post my findings this weekend.

Hello,
It looks like a regular 700 series pump to
me. One of my first pumps bought. I bet all those bases will bolt up but a low steel base was original. Just my thoughts.

Rob

That is for sure a cut down 646 the hose outlet is the tell. The 700 series never had the hose come out up there. Also it has a 646 base on it. You will find that the bottom of the door does not have the flange, it will be just cut off. Any base will technically interchange between the 600, 700, 900 and 1000 series pumps.

Tom I agree with what you are saying but two things are still weird to me. First is the hose rectractor. I have never seen that on a 646. The second thing is the small window with no ad glass. All the 646's I have seen have ad glass and I did not see a 646 in the Gas Pump book with no ad glass. I agree with everything else....base, winged emblem, ect. It would be interesting to see the retractor setup in that pump along with if it is cut.

Seems like the computer is mounted up higher too if it is a 646 compared to this one.

This is very interesting. Please open the door and take more photos for us when time permits. In my opinion it was not cut down but totally agree with you guys that it is not a typical 700 series pump . Maybe a transitional pump with the factory using over stocked parts from the 646 model?

A transitional pump is a good guess too. I should have her open today or tomorrow, if time allows.

Back in the day when tall pumps went out of style there were specialty companies that made it their business to cut down pumps. One such company was Partee in Spencerville Indiana. I have had many of these cut 646's. These were not made from the factory this way. The hose retractor is not a Bennett part, it was added when the pump was cut. To further illustrate this take a look at the pictures. Notice the taller door with no ad glass- cut down- for sure is a 646. Compare the hinge mounting area between it and a 700 door. When Bennett made the doors at the factory they always had the shelf at the very bottom, this made the door hold it's shape. When you look inside at the bottom of the it will not have a shelf.

I’ve had some that they cut them down in the middle of the doors leaving the lip at the bottom, but also ones that they cut at the bottom eliminating the bottom lip. Some cut jobs are hard to spot from the outside, others are a complete HACK job.

Okay, to solve this mystery....

1) I was able to get out to the garage today and get to this pump (see original pic at the top of this thread). I opened her up and Tom and Matt are correct. This is definitely a cut down 646. The bottom of the door is straight, it does not have a finished edge with a lip, and is rough to the touch. It was obviously cut. The factory must've offered a tall 646 'no ad-glass' version (not pictured in Jack's book).

2) Coincidentally, another one just popped up for sale in Michigan. I was thinking about buying it and restoring them as a matching pair. The gentleman was very nice and sent me pics of his, including a close up of the tag. It reads.... 646.

Here are some pics. The first pic is my pump opened up of the cut down door (it looks like a lip on the door, but it's just a shadow on the ground). The second pic is the one for sale near me that is the same. Notice how the bottom of the door looks like it was easily pushed in, because of no reinforcement / lip. The third pic is the tag on the one for sale. You can clearly see 646 at about one o'clock in the picture.

Thank you all for your input on this matter. It was fun solving this (even though some of you already knew the answer wink )

As for buying the other one near me, I'm still up in the air. I have posted mine for sale. If it doesn't sell, I might buy the other one.

Thanks again Old Gassers,
Steve

Here is the second picture from my last post. It’s not showing up for some reason. (It’s the pump for sale near me - same model).

This is a cut down Bennett i re did a couple years ago. As mentioned above, the doors were cut off at the bottom which eliminated the bottom flange. Also, the doors were cut and sectioned horizontally through the center of the window. This one had a cast iron base which was taller than the 700 series.

Well that explains why there is no ad glass. Seems like a lot of work to shorten a pump. Glad they didn't do them all.

I wish I would have looked closer at my doors. Some guy just bought it and took it home the other day. It was fun figuring this out though.

I appreciate everyone's input.
