Can anyone verify what colors the ECO 97/98 were available in? - I have seen Red, Orange, White units which appear to be original - Im told they also came in green as well - I have recently came across this during a disassembly of a 98 - Is this color green legit?

I probably have the largest collection of literature for this meter, but none mention any color but red. All of their literature the only color they use in their illustrations is red. When I became a wholesale distributer of parts for these meters the ECO was now being made by company named MINTEX. They were in Hamilton, Ohio. At this time I also started purchasing all of the meters that came back because there was something wrong with them. They didn't bother to repair these meters, they just sent the customer a new one. At this time Marathon Oil was a large purchaser of these meters and the meters were painted a off white. I have also seen meters painted almost this same white being used in Mobil stations. I have probably owned over 500 of these meters and have never seen any that were painted any color than red originally. I have see meters painted all kinds of colors, but underneath they were red. Over the years I have restored and sold over 500 ECOs, many of them were two toned, this was not original, but this was the way many buyers wanted them. Pictures of them can be seen on this page of my website: http://petrolianacollectibles.com/eco%20air%20meters.htm

If you need any help restoring this meter I offer a Service Manual that I have rewritten, I still call it a Service Manual, but it is really a Restoration Manual. In addition we offer most parts to rebuild the meter and most of the parts are NOS. In addition to this we also rebuild the mechanisms (we have rebuilt over 500 of them) and we also offer a service where we completely restore the meter.

Everything is explained on this part of my website: http://petrolianacollectibles.com/eco%20air%20meters.htm

Jack, I have a copy of your air meter book I purchased years ago from you - I thumbed through it for the second time the other day looking for info on available colors. Much to my surprise almost all the pages were falling out due to a poor binding job - Have you had any known issues with this problem?

C'mon, Jack.....certainly you offer a lifetime warranty on your books. I thought you purchased a Lloyds of London insurance policy to cover any defects or possible damage to your publications. Knowing the great guy you are, I bet you even paid the extra premium to get coverage for your book purchasers, in the event of damage that occurs as a result of nuclear war! Here's to a very Happy New Year for you and Cindy. Best regards from your Iowa Gas roommate. John

Yes, eleven years ago. When I had the book printed the printer used some kind of glue for the binder. I was heading somewhere to sell the books so the printer had about 200 ready and I took them and sold them, also sold some through the mail. Then I started getting calls, letters, etc. saying the books were falling apart. Went to the printer, complained, they said just take the books and put them together yourself. I still hadn't paid them all the money, so my feeling was "you didn't finish the job, I didn't finish the payments." Each page of the book was in a separate box, meaning I not only had to bind them myself I also had to assemble the book. The book is 72, two-sided actual pages. I took hours putting these books together.

If you want to send the book back with a $5.00 bill in it (to cover the return shipping), we'll bind and send it back.

Jack, I appreciate you responding to the issue - My concern was I didn't want a repeat of pages falling out on purchases of your new books. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Ed

Never had a problem with the Gas Pump books, but I have had a number of guys telling me their pump books was very ragged from use. They were thanking me for writing the books at the time.

I restored one years ago and it had the exact same shade of green. I was tempted to paint it the same color, but went with yellow instead.

Stumbled across this pic of a old Cities service station - Meters mounted on wall looks like they where available in green after all! Now the challenge is to find the correct paint code

I doubt Cities Service would ever had considered putting red air meters on the outside of their buildings - so the green paint code for these would be Cities Service green.

Just saying . . .

Jim

Yes, I am aware of that - what I am looking for would be that green paint code

You can find old petroleum company paint codes at most automotive paint stores - but the majority of the petroliana restoration companies don't sell decals and other trim that was matched to those old paint codes.

You're always better off buying your globes and pump decals/signs first and having you paint matched to those pieces.

Otherwise, your pump/air meter is one color an your globe/signs/decals are another.

So IMHO, the paint codes are worthless unless you want to order custom lenses and decals matched to those particular colors.

Later . . .

Jim

Plus, the old paint codes were almost always lacquer paint. Converting a lacquer code to a modern acrylic code is going to give a result that is not the same color.

FREEDOM oil items wanted.
