Hello All,
I attended an auction yesterday that had a JC Doty visible gas pump. This pump had a 5 gallon cylinder. I ended up buying it cause it's odd and a Doty is somewhat hard to find. The pump itself is in decent shape for sitting outside for 60 yrs or so. It hadn't been used for some time, but it was still hooked up to the underground tank. The dome on it is aluminum, not sure if it's correct for the pump or not.
What I'm wondering about though is if they indeed made a 5 gal. pump, I see the Doty pumps in the book, but they are all 10 gal. I'm wondering if this cylinder has been cut down from a 10 gal.. As you can see in my last picture the numbers are etched into the glass, but you can only read half of the 5, the bottom half is covered up by the lower cylinder casting.
I also wonder if the pump handle is correct for the pump. Looks like it could be.

Thanks,
Ryan

I'm not an expert on this pump, but I would definitely say that cylinder was cut down, no question. PetroNuts makes glass cylinders with etchings, if you want a new one.

Cool Pump,
Steve

Thanks for all that posted thus far:
Tom - Thanks for confirming the aluminum top, This is surprising, figured they'd just use a steel top

Randy - No the cylinder isn't purple. It's just the dried gas on the inside of the cylinder combined with the flash on the camera, gives it a purple-ish look

Steve - If you think it's been cut down, I will end up getting a 10 gal cylinder for it.

Hope someone can confirm the handle. I may have to post a better pic of it.

Agree no question the cylinder is cut down. Handle doesn’t look right to me but can’t tell for sure with the provided picture. Cool pump.

Hello,

Yes, I agree it's a cut down cylinder. Here is a link to what appears to me to be a correct JC https://www.liveauctioneers.com/ite...on-visible-gas-pump#&gid=1&pid=2

Hope this helps. Great looking pump.

Thanks for all the informative responses, I appreciate it.
Here are some other pics of handle that’s on the pump.

I went through all my Doty literature and not one mentions that any Doty pump came in 5 and 10 gallon versions, only 10 gallon. One of the pumps in the book mentions it was available in either 5 gal. or 10 gal., but this information came from someone, not anything from a ad or brochure.

Can I have your permission to copy one of the pictures above? This is just in case I do write a fourth edition of my Gas Pump Bible. This pump differs from two of the pumps that are in the book in that it has a round bottom, not a squire one as shown in the book.

Thanks in advance,

Jack Sim

Yes, It's easy to see from the pictures it's a square bottom. He's just fishing for free material.

Jack, Thanks for looking in your literature for the gallon type. As Charley and Kevin stated, the bottom skins are square with rounded corners. The upper skins are 12 sided.
If you still would like pictures let me know, I can try to get some better ones. The ones I posted aren't the best, the lighting was pretty poor inside the garage.
