Am fairly new to gas and oil sign collecting and am attempting to educate myself on repops verses real.
Have read several pieces which have been helpful.
My question is are the repopers using original sign companies names on their reproduction work? I am talking about Stout
sign co. Veribrite and Donaldson (and there are others). Some of these signs bear the name of a well known legitimate sign co. and sometimes a date.
Are these always real? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Pecanman, Welcome to Oldgas. I am not a sign collector, but there are lots of articles on this site regarding specific signs (repop vs. original). Try using the search button located in the toolbar above and type in the individual signs you are trying to learn about. To answer your very basic question, yes the reproductions sometimes have the name and/or date of legitimate sign companies. Here is a link to known sellers of repop signs on eBay. http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=692064&page=7 Do the research before you buy and best of luck with your collecting!

Regards, Jim

I collect gas pump salt and pepper shakers
and the plastic coin banks both made by AVSCO.

Pecanman,

Not only do they reproduce the manufacturer on the sign, they also reproduce the stamps, like Veribrite Chicago, etc.

In other words if you see a 29” Phillips 66 sign and think it’s real, just because it has a Veribrite-Chicago stamp, think again.

Before you buy a sign, learn the differences. You have to go to shows and look at real signs. My advice, never buy a sign on line unless you know what your doing. Buy from reputable places, such as guys on here, and at reputable shows.

WTB signs: WHITE STAR, FILMOIL, FLYING A button and Economical Transportation Chevrolet Sign. Also looking for a Wayne 866. Send a PM. Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. Speedracer, your explanation is what I figured was happening.
