Now that the weather is breaking I am getting 1-2 requests per day asking me to identify a air meter or a gas pump. I try to be polite, I give them some info but then ask them if the item is for sale. It started yesterday "Can you identify this visible pump." I did, gave him as much info as I had, asked him if it was for sale. Next email, he said yes, my next email said "How Much?" Cindy and I decided we would pay up to $1000 for the pump. Just got an email from him, said they sold the pump for $350.00 without giving me a chance to purchase it. Question, should I sit here on the computer and give away info so people can sell an item to someone else without giving me a chance?

I would say no. I would tell them right up front of the pump or air meter is for sale you would be a buyer. And tell them it only worth what somebody is willing to pay. So there is no need for you to give a value unless they are looking for a insurance price. Just my 2cents

Well that sucks Jack. You just have to use your wise old owl powers to discern when, and/or if you want to help certain people. And if the item is something your interested in, get the deal done up front before you give away the wisdom.

I understand your frustration Jack. Doesn't make sense why they would ask for an expert valuation on the pump and then sell it anyway to someone else - for less money to boot! They could have made an extra $650 and made both parties happy had they been patient. Had they sold it for more money, it would have made more sense, though in that case they could have been polite and given you a chance to up your offer first.

Rather than ask if for sale, tell them what you are willing to pay.

It's up to you whether or not you should identify an air meter or pump for someone. I get a lot of emails asking for info on globes. I always answer if I have the info, or suggest who they should contact for more info. In the business world it's called goodwill. Goodwill will often lead to future sales or buying opportunities.
As for the missed opportunity to buy....Tell them in your first reply what your offer is.
Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros. http://www.lastgas15.com/
