I have brass gallon markers on a visiable that I am trying to clean the old gas off. What is the best way? They are so thin I am afraid of breaking one. Also they have numbers in the middle and not sure if them where painted? Any help would be great. I will post a picture soon. Thanks Scott

If they are brass, soak them in white vinegar with a little bit of salt. Scrub lightly with 0000 steel wool. Rinse well with water. Rinse very well, salt is corrosive and you want to get it all off.
