Found this blue crown globe. I am not really sure how to tell if original or repo. It had some paint overspray on the top so I have been cleaning the top by using polish compound. Seemed to work well without removing what blue is left. I like the faded look and it sure looks like it has seen the weather, even paint on the bottom side where it appears someone painted pump it may have been on. I would like to clean the rest but not sure if would be better to leave as is. I would also like to have an idea if it appears original to others. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Yes..it's real/original. It has the sharp arrows around the lower ridge, indicative of an original, as well as the correct threaded base. (Most blue crowns have copper rings, by the way) I would not touch the blue personally with any cleaners....sometimes the paint on crowns gets very brittle and will clean off with water even. I would stick to cleaning the white smooth areas only. Darin

Thanks for your reply. I will have to look for a screw fitter so I can mount / display it.

Just trying to learn about things and am wondering what age you think this may be? It sure does look like a really cool find.

Like others have said, leave the blue paint as-is. That's how an old original should look anyway. Nice globe!

The Solite lettered blue crowns appeared in the mid 1920's....non-lettered blue crowns were made through the late 40's. The weathered look of Tom's globe illustrates how the blue usually looks on a crown that had endured many years of service on top of a gas pump, a classic blue jean color fade which is very cool. My blue crown is actually etch dated 3-41 underneath, and wasn't used too much by the looks of it. Darin
