As I mentioned in a previous post (Phillips 66 Porcelain Sign Makers) I have been looking at several 30" P66 signs. One originally made by VERIBRITE that is in mint condition but overpriced, another in near mint condition but also overpriced and this one that is attached that is not in near mint condition but may be reasonably priced.
I'd like to get thoughts from members regarding the condition and value.
Many Thanks.......

Don't know how much that sign sells for when privately changing hands, but at auction I think it would sell for $700-900.

Welcome to Old-Gas! Because the market always changes and the chance that two people at an auction want the same sign for their collection, prices are hard to guess. Also trying to judge a value of a sign without holding it in our hands is always a silly guess. Best place for judging values is to look at completed E-bay auctions and completed advertising auctions like this. http://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/Porcelain-Phillips-66-Gasoline-Sign_26F454BAC0/
Thanks Mike

Thanks Brain and Mike.
I agree, values are harder to judge without seeing in person. I also have been told by several people on this sight (see post in general petrolina discussion) that auctions are not a good estimate of value for varying reasons. I am not new to collecting so I have an appreciation and understanding for some of these points. I am new to petrolina so I am trying to get up to speed. I know condition is imprortant. These signs in near mint condition have been going for $2K+, both at auction and retail from what I have seen. This seems ridiculously high to me .....but hey?!?! This particular sign is nowhere close to near mint. How much does that affect the value. The owner seems to be reasonable and we are currently discussing a purchase. I don't want to overpay for a sign that is in this condition........

I watched that aucion live by the way. I was going to bid but bowed out as the price went up. The price just seems crazy......isn' it?

I was there in person bidding on that exact sign. It was near-mint with excellent gloss, but I still thought $1800 was way too much for the 30" version. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate though since I got out-bid on everything else I bid on!
There were a bunch of these that sold at the Morphy auction last fall for $1100-1300 after the BP. Granted, the fact that several sold at once may have depressed prices a little but I still think that range is pretty close for a high-condition sign. Yours is a little rough and the gloss isn't as good, which is why I gave that estimate. You have to decide how much it's worth to you, whether you're buying as a collector or a dealer (you're the former I think). I can tell you that based on the pictures of the sign in question, if it were offered to me for $700 I would probably take it. But that's just me.

I have had several of these Phillips 66 shields over the years, and its actually a pretty common sign. The company made many thousands of them. I love the colors on it, but I still don't understand the pricing of minty ones being around that 2K mark? These signs have been reproduced and its another reason to stay away unless you're absolutely sure. A real minty one used to bring top dollar at around $650 to $700, and while I understand the increase in popularity and value on a lot of signs, I really don't understand this one.

Brian I must be a cheapskate too. I was not there but I left several online pre-bids and they didn't even come close. My opinion was that the majority of the items I was watching went for at least double what I consider market value. Not knocking the auction house - they did their job well and the consignors must have been thrilled. Joe

BrianH I agree 100% with Brian. I was going to say $700-800 after I saw the picture, and before I read the rest of the replies. I think $700-900 would be fair. But with the chips and the fade in the black, I would try to get it on the cheap. I paid $1100 for this one about 4 months ago. Yes, there is a ding in the bottom, but the gloss is outstanding. No it is not for sale... LOL (The shape looks a little off, because of the angle I took the picture) Here's a link to the only gas and oil sign I ever bought on ebay.... It was fake, and I had to get my money back. http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=110545&Number=661296#Post661296

Kevin, I think it's a matter of perspective between a long-time collector and a new one. You probably walk right past these at shows because you have one (or several maybe) and have seen many over the years you've been collecting. However, to newbies like me (I've been collecting almost exactly a year now), EVERYTHING is cool and interesting because it's all new. Last weekend was the first time I've seen one of these up close. I know they're a common sign, but I don't have one and would like one so they're interesting to me. In a few years, I will probably walk right past these too since I'll (hopefully) already have one and will be looking for rarer stuff.

Kevin mentioned that this size and design of Phillips 66 sign has been reproduced. In fact, so many near-perfect ones started showing up awhile back, that many guys started to get suspicious (rightly so, it turns out). I've seen this reproduction at gas and oil, and auto swap meets here in the Midwest for several years. The reproduction is well-done, perhaps because the design is relatively simple to replicate.
As has been previously mentioned about well-done, unmarked reproductions here on Old Gas, these fake signs are now starting to change hands for the second, third, and even fourth time....sometimes going to auction from the estates of long-time collectors who've passed on (and perhaps never knew the sign was a repro). Or course, all of this makes it difficult and dangerous for the newer hobby person going after some of these sign designs that have been well-reproduced.
It's a freaking mess for the hobby....but that's been said here on Old Gas before. I don't have a solution for Project 66, other than to suggest he slow down a bit in his drive to acquire one of these 30" Phillips 66 signs. As has been noted, it really is a common sign. I believe a decent condition, original will eventually show up in his budget range...but probably not at an auction.

I've been wanting this sign, probably as bad as Project66 did, however it takes patience. Sooner or later, one you like will come along for the price you like. But it may take a little time. Go to a few shows this summer, and you'll find one.

Thanks to all for the feedback, it is much appreciated. I have yet to purchase a sign and will keep looking for the right deal.
Regarding swap meets this year......Are there any in the Houston area typically?

On the main page of this web site, click on 'Buy/sell,' then click 'swap meet list.' You will see one near you coming up.
