So me being still in my rookie season I had read somewhere that cookie cutter was only used in references to the mobil Pegasus. Now I had friend tell me over the weekend that term is open to any sign that has an edge on it that gives the sign depth. So I was wondering wich is patrolianna correct?

When you say cookie cutter...it's automatically assumed to be a Mobil Pegasus.

Also puffer is a term only reserved for a Mobil puffer Pegasus.

I'm, pretty sure there are two opinions on this term. And I would agree that the bigger Mobil horse is for sure the sign I have heard is most usually referred to as the king of the "cookie cutters".
I have heard, and use, "cookie cutter" used to describe any sign that has a 90 degree bend around the perimeter-usually but not always without a contrasting border. It gives signs a bit more structure and rigidity.
A "self framed sign" is not exactly the same thing. In my opinion, that term is typically used when the perimeter has a contrasting or different color band (but not always)and typically has an upturned border that continues for varying widths before an eventual 90 degree downturn.

A bit off the Cookie cutter topic. A "Self Framed tin sign" refers to a sign that is one piece of tin that has been stamped to make it look as it is in a frame. Increasingly some (wrongly in my opinion) refer to any tin sign that has been framed later as a self framed tin sign.

This is the back and front of this sinclair. Would you classify it as a cookie cutter

NO. A "cookie cutter" sign is an irregular shaped sign with the bend around the edge. Think of it like a giant cookie cutter. The Sinclair is simply a rectangle. The bend gives the long sign strength and a little depth. Dave

I personally don't think there is a rigid answer to this, more a matter of opinion, and I'm not saying I'm right or wrong but I would describe that sign as having a turned down edge or maybe even might call it a cookie cutter type sign. Right or wrong, I personally use it is a term used to describe these types of signs. Dave- Couldn't Ken's sign cut a rectangular cookie?
I do agree with Muntzman, though-"A bit off the Cookie cutter topic. A "Self Framed tin sign" refers to a sign that is one piece of tin that has been stamped to make it look as it is in a frame. Only I might ad that there are porcelain self framed signs also.

Rick, would you agree with Dave Gill-that the Pegasus is the only cookie cutter? Or do you feel there are others? Would Kens sign not be a CC because the sides aren't tall enough? Or? Just curious...

Sinclair made both a flat vertical Pennsylvania and Opaline sign. They also made them with the 90 degree bend as shown on the Sinclair sign above. I often use the term cookie cutter to tell them apart. I myself do not automatically assume anything when I hear that term. Nothing to argue about as there is more than one thought on the topic.

When I think of Cookie Cutter I picture the container my mother and grandmother had of Cookie Cutters, with those in mind the only sign I think of that resembles an actual Cookie Cutter is the Pegasus.

X2
My grandma never had any long skinny cookie cutters, hers were all animals (deer, bears and more) so this is why I feel the Pegasus is the only true Cookie-Cutter!!

Thanks
