Curt, be sure to post some pictures and give us a report.
$30 early buyers fee is cheap....it's $50 at Peotone! You could easily spend $200 on gas and $100 on food driving the back roads and not find a fraction of whats at that (or any) show. What could be better than hanging out with friends at a gas show?

I always go to this one. It's one of the rare ones that is a half hour from my house.
I will try to take some pictures if Curt would be kind enough to post them for me again?

Geeeeez guys I was just joking. Curt listed his expenses going to Escalon and everyone thought it was funny. This is a great event and if I could arrange to go by all means I would. I would probably spend a bunch however because I don't just find much at garage sales. I have heard this event brings out the highest quality gas stuff to be found. This is a must on a collectors list.

Thanks for the email Curt. Are you taking Jennifer? Ted

Here's what Poorman posted about Escalon....
"Made a 600 mile round trip run to the Escalon Gas Bash yesterday to see what the gas geeks were up to.
Here's the tally on my trip.

Gas $100.00
Food $35.00
T-shirt $10.00
Other stuff $0
Meeting Gas Geeks--Priceless"

Ted, you must eat more than Curt. LOL.
Curt, $145 total.....that's an expensive T-shirt! Kinda reminds me of JJ and his kite, but thats another story.
Have a great time at the show!
Bob

Yep I do eat more and remember Pam and Ethyl go with. More gas cause it would be like 800 miles round trip. I would still do it but my tally for what I would spend on finds would be about 2K.
I just can't turn down a good deal. Ha Ha. Happy to see this turned out in the right context.

That tally included hitting Ted up for free beverages so I saved a couple of bucks!

Remember, I'm a garage sale guy. I just go to gas bashes to confirm what a great deal I got at home.

I've heard that the "crowd" that used to pack Roy's place have pretty much disappeared. What's with some of these show's charging an early fee?; ebay has taken alot of people away from gas bashes. That's why Fred & I have NO admission fee, we want guys to spend their $$$$ with the vendors, not take it away from them! JMO Looking forward to seeing ALOT of you guys in June; also looking forward to meeting T-way & the keeper!

Roy's show declined partly because people assumed that because he was selling some of his collection he was no longer holding a gas bash or that the bash would be over.

I'm not justifying the fee, but most of the early birds are vendors so they pay the thirty bucks anyhow.

WELL,
IF you can't afford the early fee, or the gas, or the food, or the motel !

Drive slower, eat less & SLEEP in your car/truck. Pay for a table + $7 and MAYBE sell a couple items to recover some of your $$ !

Tom,
Why shouldn't a promoter be entitled to making a profit? Most shows are held at fairgrounds, hotels, etc. There's alot of expense involved with putting on a show. Rent, insurance, security, printing and mailing flyers........
Thats alot of money to lay out. Vendor fees usually cover those expenses. Admission fees are where promoters make their money. As far as early buyers fees.....They originated because buyers wanted in early and are willing to pay for the privledge. Peotone just raised their early buyers fee to $50, but allowed them in on Saturday during set up. Considering what everything else costs today a $20 or $30 early buyers fee sounds pretty reasonable.
It's great that you and Fred let the public in for free. Most show promoters can't do that.

I don't begrudge any one making a profit (I think that's what helped build our country); the promoter's that have to rent a place for a show, insurance, security, etc. would at least like to cover their expenses I would think. I know what goes into promoting a show, besides Fred's 2 shows, I'm also involved in a club that puts on a sports collectibles show within the Seattle city limits (try dealing with a large city government sometime!!) Yes, Fred's show is on private property (as is Roy's) so alot of the things you brought up we don't have to deal with (fortunately!!) I've been to Roy's show twice in the past & always had a great time (got to spend time with Professor Bennett; that is always a good time!!) We need to support the bashes; I just don't like having to spend extra $$$$$$$ to get into a show "early"...

I have paid an early fee at the Big Sky gas show. Actually I think I asked what it would take to get in when the dealers do and Barry said "for $10.00 you can come to the vendor barbecue too." I miss that show and it was great to meet the guys the night before.
I'd not go to a show that charged $50 to get in early. Maybe $20. I'll get a space at the Front Range Gas Bash but mostly so I can get in when the dealers do. I'll bring some stuff to sell but I don't have much to sell.
CAUTION!
RARIN TO GO RANT!!!
Quite a few years back while at Iowa Gas I overheard some dealers complain about the lack of trafic and sales. Well as a collector and NOT a dealer I wanted to tell them "why should I drive hundreds of miles to go to a show when I know that all the good items got snatched up by the dealers who got to go in earlier than the buyers". I'm not going to drive across a couple of states to look at Fire Chief signs and Pennzoil cans. The next year they were all about the "NO EARLY SALES" thing with workers wearing shirts that said just that.
Last year was the best Iowa gas I had been to as far as seeing good stuff on the lot on Thursday. However me and my friend rolled into town Wednesday at about 5:00 PM and there were people walking all over the place. I asked someone I knew who was set up and he said he had been selling since about 11:00 AM. The day before the show is to start. So now this year I will show up earlier but guess what? FREE ADMISSION FOR BUYERS! And the buyers have the SAME access as dealers. It's a level playing field and that is what makes Iowa Gas one of the best shows in the country.
This is nothing to do with Roy Reeds gas bash but some people where giving their opinions about early entry fees and this is mine. If I was able to go to the Roy Reed show I would either pay the $30 or I wouldn't go at all. Just my opinion.

Yea Dick,
Last year's IG was great. The weather, the stuff, and the feel. I really think that having the show all at the hotel made for a real good atmosphere. Everyone just seemed friendlier and more social. Or maybe it was just that I was less grumpy. Doubt it. Hope the shows at the hotel again this year.

Normally I'm the photographer for the west coast gas bashes. I was planning on being at Roy's on Friday, but my plans blew up due to the better half making other plans. I also had to go to Anaheim today to take my son to a band competition and didn't really want to make the LA run twice in two days.

I was hoping that I could squeeze in the bash this morning, but there wasn't enough time to get my son where he needed to be and make it to Roy's.

To make a short story longer, on Friday night Roy called Mark Mendenhall to tell him that he had scored an original Richfield pump for him at his bash. As it turned out I was at Marks and I told him that Dick Bennett was at Roys and that we were going to meet at the Pomona Swap Meet after Roys bash.

I figured that my consolation prize for not making the bash was a preview of Pomona on Saturday afternoon. The plan was to meet Dick around 1:00 pm to get my entry pass and check out the early arrivals.

Dick called me at noon to say he was still at Roy's. I was sitting in Pomona having lunch. Dick said, why don't you just drive out to Roys and meet me and we'll load the pump right into your truck. Roys was only about 30 miles so I said sure.

So as it turned out I made it to Roy Reed's Gas Bash. Of course it was 1:00 pm on the second day and the vendors were frantically loading and leaving. I didn't even bother to take my camera out of the truck. I did see some of the leftovers. Talked to Roy and he said it was a good bash and a good turnout.

Bad news, no photos!

I'm depending on GasPumpRob to get me some pictures from Friday and hopefully some of the others picked up the slack.

Can't even show you the pump I picked up for Mark Mendenhall because it's wrapped in a moving pad and I haven't even seen it yet.

Ralph White sent in this comment to post for him:

"I attended Roy Reed's Gas Bash this past weekend in Fontana, CA. The show was great and the hospitality from Roy, his wife Theresa and friends was super.
Many of the hard core west coast collectors were there with great stuff. The weather was nice and lot's of good stories to share along with making new friends."

I hate to dredge up an old thread, but I remember someone at Roy Reed's had a California state highway Bear 71 sign ... does anyone know who that collector is, and if that Bear is still available for sale?

thanks smile

the 71 I'm trying to hunt down was an original style (15 1/4 by 17 inches, porcelain, no reflectors): I even managed to get a photo of it, but alas I do not recall the collector who was selling it. Here is the picture, from Roy Reed's in April 2009:

any help is greatly appreciated!
