Question for all you experienced oldgas auction attendees. In reality can a deal be had at an auction such as this? Or does everything pretty much go for market value?
And how does an auction like this come about? An old collector pass away or something?

Deal can always be had, it seams that every auction when a report is given by one of the attendees a few items slip through the cracks for undermarket value however most the items go for fair market value.

As far as how this auction was put together I am not sure but I would guess the items are on consignment.

This is a consignment auction. As far as I know....no one died to make this happen.... In answer to your question about deals.....I have been to a lot of auctions.....sometimes there are deals....sometimes there are not.....it is a matter of numbers. No one wins all the time.

After producing 7 consignment auctions, most of which were fairly successful, I can say with confidence that there are deals to be had at every auction. It may not me what you are looking for or an item that you collect, but things always slip thru the cracks. At our final auction in Feb. stuff went mega-high, but I can remember the following things that were reasonable:
1. Gilbarco 86 unrestored $800
2. Wayne cast iron air-meter $500
3. Several Double-bubble clocks under $500
4. Coke Vendo 44 RESTORED & WORKING $2200

I know there were others, these are just fresh on MY mind because they all belonged to me. No, they weren't steals, but all well below market. And this was an auction where 20,000+ brochures were mailed to oil & gas collectors AND was web-cast. Sometimes the right people are looking forward to a better item, talking to a buddy, or in the bathroom. Deals are ALWAYS available.

Just got home from this sale, I did put your flyers out Scott. The 850 was major league rough, I stopped at $600. As far as any questions about steals....I bought 2 Phillips 66 Ethyl globes for under $200 each, an 11" Mellowed 100 Million Years Dino for $180, a mint Union 76 No Smoking for $130, a pristine Gilbert & Barker 176 with blue glass (2 bb's) for $750, and finally a complete Frontier globe on capco for $750. None of these are like grand theft (except maybe the dinosaur) but good deals none the less.
